The rear view mirror on my 86 Van keeps falling off. I have re-glued it on many times. I even had a glass shop do it a couple of times. It may stay on for a couple weeks to a few months. I have tried numerous products but nothing seems to work. I have also used numerous cleaners including sand paper and acetone. Any suggestions. Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe you may have made it worse with the sandpaper. I do understand that you only tried that after it has fallen off a few times already, so I'm not jumping your case for it. But super glue type adhesives are depending on smooth, non-porous surfaces to bond. If you sand on the glass or the mounting button, you're scratching it up, even if it's not enough to notice.

At this point I'd try a slightly different spot on the glass away from where you sanded, and another button if you sanded on that, too.

Another thing would be if there's any glue remaining on the glass or button, that's going to prevent it from sticking well, too.

Finally...it seems like the glues have gotten wimpy over the years. Used to be if the mirror came off, it took a freaking chunk of glass with it. No more. Might try a different brand, if you haven't already, might have to go to a different store to find it or mail-order. 3M is a great brand and has one they refer to as high bond. Permatex and Loctite are good brands too. The 3M might be harder to find but it could be worth a try.

Richard. Thanks for the reply. A new button is already in the works. The sanding was very light just to try to remove any possible silicone film that may be there. A new spot is a good idea. I have tried the 3m products with no luck. Maybe a new button and spot will do the trick. Thanks Jon

Get some E6000 clear adhesive. Put a dab on the button, and tape it to the windshield in the original spot. Don't remount the mirror until the adhesive cures, at least 24 hours.
