Hello all,
I noticed a slight squealing sound coming from my drivers side front. I check the brakes, pads, calipers nothing. It would come and go. Then it got worse over a few days. I took the rotor off to find that the outside bearing had gone bad. I bought replacement ones and put them in without issue. My question is this: Where the outside bearing was sitting on the spindle made a wear mark of about 1/32 - 1/64 deep and not very wide. Actually it tapers off towards the outside. Do I need to replace the spindle and do the bearings over again or will it be ok the way it is.
Thanks to all of you for your time and help.
Dave

In my line of work I have seen many spindles get marred by bad bearings. In a pinch alot of them can be cleaned up and re-used depending on how much damage was done as well as how well the repair was done.
If you can clean up the damaged area with some minor grinding and clean up with emory cloth so that the new bearing slides on easily with no excessive movement or slop you can get away with the repair. If you have major damage tot he surface the bearing rides on then you will not be able to save it.
The bearing inner race doesnt spin on the spindle,it relies on a slight press fit so that the rollers and cage of the bearing are what spins on the stationary inner race. If it fits tight after the repair your ok as long as you dont have to use excess force to get the bearing to slide on the damaged part.
In all honesty,if your car can be down for a little while you should search out a spindle that is in good shape and replace it.

Assuming that the OP used the '1969-70' big Chevy/Corvette spindles; finding another one should be quite easy.

sometimes one can take a center punch (sharp pointed punch) and make several marks on the worn surface. this raises metal around the center of the censored and gives the race a locating surface. if it is not too bad, this and maube some loctite will make a good repair.

If the spindle has any measurable wear or raised areas where the bearing sits, it should be replaced. The inner part of each bearing should be an easy sliding fit on the spindle. This allows it to "creep" around as you drive which spreads the wear over the entire wearing surface to promote long bearing life. If the inner part of the bearing is unable to rotate, then all of the load and wear will be on one small area at the bottom of the inner part of the bearing and it will fail prematurely. Jim

Thanks to all of you for the help. Is there a particular place to order a new spindle for the drivers side. I don't want to get a cheap one made in china.
Thanks

As long as you know what yours are and can find a match I wouldnt have a single issue using an original good shape part.

Understood. Been looking. The only thing I found so far was a company named All American Classics.com. They have them. Does anyone know if they are good to deal with.
Thanks Dave

Can you take a picture of your spindle so we can see what your car is installed with? Might be a better way to help you out.

Good idea. It still has the stock spindles. The only thing I did was a disk brake conversion from SSBC. There was no need to change them out.
Thanks

Thats awesome!!
Thats what keeps this hobby alive.
I asked here about 2 very small brackets on the inside upper corner of my headlight doors being missing. A member said to give me his address and he would send a set. I asked what he was looking for in return and he said some seat buttons for his 66 buckets, low and behold I found 4 for him and shipped them to him as a surprise.
