While I'm waiting on the wiring harness to arrive this week, I decided to go ahead and remove the gas tank today. The tank drained and came unhooked nice and easy FOLLOWING THE SHOP MANUAL... I'm learning! Disposed of the gas and decided to have a looksee inside the tank by removing the float and sender unit. Ok, first off, I'm buying a new tank. I've read all the debates about replacement vs. sealing and there's no way I'm risking putting that rusty inside mess back on my car. Ok, that aside, the float barely swivels in it's sensor; like it has to be forced. Is it a safe bet that it is corroded beyond repair? I'd be happy to get a modern unit anyway. Oh, and the ball is GONE. Any thoughts? Anybody want a spare? Unless it's fixable I'll probably just buy a new one. Thanks.
I drove a '50 from the day I got my license thru college! Sadly, we sold it when I got married. I recently got the chance to buy the same car back from the man I sold it to; but the deal fell through and now I own a nicer one: 4 Dr Styleline Deluxe!

I do not know of a replacement float for the sender. But you could try this while waiting for other parts. I changed my sender to a new one. For the heck of it I put the old one in a jar and covered it with vinegar and let it set for abouot a week. Hosed it off and it worked like a new one. Vinegar is slightly acid and does a great job on light rust and gunk.

Good that you are using your manual

I agree with you, replacing the tank AND sending unit is a sure fire way to avoid the ongoing gunk issue.
