Need to remove oil pan to change out oil pump. Can I loosen motor mounts and raise slightly to get clearance? Do I have to take out tranny? I am a novice with this truck so any help would be greatly appreciated.

if it's a small block you're talking about, then yes- you should be able to loosen the mounts and raise - with a hoist - the motor if you need clearance. The transmission doesn't touch the oilpan.

I must urge you to be safe when doing so. Don't 'over loosen' the mounts. Do only what's necessary to clear the pan / crossmember.

I'd also suggest undoing the bolts - if you can - before you raise the motor- to minimize the amount of time you spend under a 575 lb hunk of metal hanging precariously from a chain.

Once the pan is cleared, lower the motor again. Do any scraping/gasket cleaning on the block with the motor secured.

Re-raise it when you're ready to re-install the pan- but again - do the minimum amount necessary while the motor is in the air.

Once the pan is in place, lower the block again and torque to spec.
