Good Evening all,
Well, I worked on the 52 some today. Got the hood off, looked at and thought about my brakes and started it up to run a little bit. I'm still watching things pretty close and before long I can see a little smoke INSIDE the car!!
I'm not sure what changed (I've started and run the car a number of times), but today the 12V battery fried the stereo. My wife did say my younger son was playing with the knobs etc. (would turning the radio on make a difference?)
Not really surprised, but would have thought it would have blown the inline fuse, not start to melt the radio inards. At any rate, I felt around, figured out what was melting and got the inline fuse pulled.
Now, since I didn't burn the car up today, I have a question. Is the little spring that controls the butterfly valve in the exhaust line available through NAPA or do I need to get one from the Filling Station or other specialty store?
Also, I removed the little stub of exhaust that had been on there. Is is ok to run the car without any pipe? I am planning on just running a straight pipe for the time being, is that OK? I don't want to create a spark thrower and I wasn't sure if some back pressure was desirable for the motor.
Lastly, my other boo-boo today was putting the spring back on the carb wrong, in this case full throttle. And, as Murphy predicts, it started on the first bump and zipped right up there. Fortunately I was starting it from the front seat and in about one second turned it off, startled me though.
Chris

The thermostatic spring may not be available at NAPA but all the reproduction parts houses sell them. You need to consult the manual for the proper installation, as it is directional. Running an engine with out exuaust should not hurt it but coming straight out of the manifold the noies would be irritating to me. Straight pipes are horrible (my opinion) Opinion based on a 49 convertible with dual straights, never heard any one say it sounded good.

I would not run the car with no pipe. You will be dumping exhaust into your engine compartment and then it can suck right into the inside of the car. If you don't want to put any pipes on it for a while, then I would at least get a long piece of flex tube and drop it down from the manifold and exit it out the edge of the wheel opening.
Turning the radio on should not make a difference. I too would have thought the inline would have gone. Just look at it this way...better in your shop than when on the road driving 60 mph in traffic!

Thanks guys,
I won't drive the car w/o an exhaust pipe. The exhaust doesnt' have to look at all to find a path into the front seat, Fred Flinstone could drive my rig. Even the staight pipe would be a temp fix until I get some other issues worked out. I think my buddy has a bender, so I should be able to get by with a straight section of pipe and bend it to exhaust some place in front of the driver's side rear tire. A freind at church has offered the use of a dual exhaust set up that I will be working towards as the car comes along.

It was my understanding running with manifolds only would allow cool/cold air to enter manifold, upon shut down, with the possibility of warping valves. With a long straight pipe attached to manifold, cool air will not get back to the valves.

I have always been told the same. you will see drag racers with zoomies put tennis balls on the pipes right after the run
