so, replaced the turn signal harness.
kind of a weird setup since I have a new engine in an old car.
Here is what I have....first with ammeter disconnected....key off no lights on. brake lights work, tail lights serve as daytime running lights. turn signals light up (all around the car) with no flashing when the lever is switched. dash lights do not work when lever moved for turn signals.
with ammeter connected...tail lights on key off. left turn signal flashes and works fine with key on. brake lights work fine. right turn signal lights all lights on the right, no flash. dash lights light up when turn signals used.
headlights are wired separately and work fine. no dash lights with headlights on.
anything obvious I could be missing here? hate to have to wire everything.

I would say ground problems.

I would say ground problems.
I will second that idea. Everytime I've had strange electrical problems such as yours, it usually ends up being a grounding issue.

wouldnt it be safe to say that everything is grounded ok if all of the lights work?
I have about 10 grounds body to frame to engine. All done with the GM braided straps from other ls cars.
turn signal switch is brand new. same problems before the new switch, so assume the switch is not the problem.

I had weird stuff going on with the electrics in my '74 Impala - I don't remember the exact details (it was 25 years ago), but it involved the wipers & the head lights.
If I remember correctly - & it's entirely possible that I can't (I've already forgotten things I did last week), when I switched the lights on, the wipers would start going (or it could have been the other way around).
After a frustrating search for the problem, I eventually found it - the ground connection for the high-beam warning light on the dash had disconnected itself (the screw got loose & eventually fell out) - so the current was finding ground through other components.
I cleaned up the ground connection & re-attached it to the body & everything worked again.
The last line of your original post "anything obvious I could be missing here?..."
It's not always the obvious.

thanks guys. I have the headlights one the original circuit and the wipers on a key on hot from a fuse tie in.
I am going to go over all of the grounds in a few days.
Thanks for the advice.
