light came on for the first time this morning so i stopped at oriellys to check code and it came up with an evap emissions code. truck is a 01 tahoe 5.3 4x4 with auto tranny. was on my way to change the oil pan gasket on tahoe, no light was on. stopped at store cranked truck up and light was on. need some help. where and what could this be. not up todate with the emissions crap like i should be. thanks in advance for all your help......mike

That code could be from something as simple as not putting the gas cap on tight enough or to having to replace the gas cap. Or it can be something more serious. So make sure the gas cap is on tight, and if it is then replace the gas cap. If the light doesn't go away, you could visually check the fuel lines for leaks or damage, or you might need to take it in for diagnostics.

Usually when I get a code, I do a google search for that code number with the terms "OBD II" and I look for sites that give not only the code explanation but also diagnostics. The code number is important to write down or remember after getting it read.

Did it say the evap system had a leak? That is very common with these systems and small leaks can be hard to find, even with a smoke machine. Inpect you lines (fuel and evap) and see if you can spot a split or a tear or even a disconnected line. The gas cap is also something to check as mentioned.
