after changing my front wheel hub bearings I noticed the end of the sway bar on the drivers side has split in half about 3 to 4 inches back from the end. I got a used replacement from a scrapyard and the one they gave me is smaller in diameter. the original is about 1 5/16". the replacement is about 1". my truck is an 05 silverado 1500 2wd C model. the replacement is off of an 06 silverado 1500 4x4 k model. they gave me the center bushings with the replacement and I wonder if this is a safe sway bar to use due to the smaller diameter.
any ideas? bill

Having "a" sway bar is a huge improvement over having none, but your truck came with the thicker bar for a reason. Your best bet would be to go back with the one it came with, rather than a smaller one. It'll certainly be safe to use, but you will experience somewhat more body roll in the handling.

I agree about the body roll. glad I still have the receipt to take it back. sure is strange that a 4X4 would have a thinner sway bar. maybe they have larger springs and don't need as much support.

Some of the older "thicker" sway bays are actually hollow. The thinner ones are solid. I found this out when I broke mine on my 01.
Also, the rear sway bars on burbs, and blazers can be the thin ones. Are you sure they didn't give you one of those instead?....

It came off a 4X4 truck which has Torsion Bar front suspension, that would explain the difference.

The sway bar receipt had full info as to what truck it came off of ('06 k1500 4x4) also had the donor's vin number. Did the research on the vin and that confirmed everything. definitely not a rear sway bar. It feels kind of lightweight so I'm thinking it's hollow also. must be heavier front springs on a 4x4 therefore doesn't need the heavier, thicker dia. sway bar. hope they have one for the 2wd c1500.$38.00 was a sweet price compared to the best I found on the internet (summit racing $181.00)
thanks again, bill
