Just rebuilt my engine, and now I have a knock. Haven't started tearing anything down, was goin to check my lifters and make sure that one didn't come loose. Question for you guys that have rebuilt a 235.

Did you notice or remember if you had side to side slack on your wrist pin to pistons? I just remember some of my pistons, the connecting rod was able to slide side to side on the wrist pin. It didn't seem right to me when I was putting it together, just wanted to see how others saw the situation.

Please help! Its been a long winter, and now summers here and the truck still isn't back on the road.

Yes, the pistons will move side to side on the piston pin.

Do yours make a lot of noise? If this is what I'm hearing....that is a horrendous sound!

Once the piston is in the bore and the connecting rod is on the crankshaft, there is no side to side movement of the piston pins.

Look elsewhere for your knock.., either piston slap or too much connecting rod clearance would be my first guess.

The main bearings and connecting rod cap bearings were clearanced when I replaced all of the bearings just 2 hours of runtime ago. I will still most likely pull the pan and re-check everything now tho. Has anyone had knocking before from cam bearings, or because of too much ring gap? I didn't replace the cam bearings, and ring gap was a little over spec, .020-.030 compared to .017 max recommended I believe.

I have never heard of cam bearing knock, but there is undersize bearings and it follows there is cams with the journals undersize as well, do yours match up? .010 difference might go unnoticed (?) and no that amount of ring gap will not cause that sound, could it be an exhaust leak? Sometimes that sounds an awful lot like a rod. That would be an easy fix to check before you take the whole engine apart. But what ever you do, don't leave us hanging after 5 pages of following your saga...

Come to think of it, I do remember that my rings were slightly out of spec. Spec called for something like .017-.022 gap when placed in the bore, and all of them I know I was around .025-.030 gap.

Do you guys think my pistons are slapping around in the bores?

anyone else have any input? I just finally pulled the pan. I do have alot of front to back movement on my connecting rods where they meet the crankshaft. Do you guys have a good amount of "knock" in your engines?

Same bearing is bad as was when I first tore engine down this past winter. I should have known that I would have to have the crank ground!

Lesson learned, don't always listen to your Dad, next time, pull the entire engine and check everything personally!!
