Hey all, sorry its been a while. I want to remove the front motor mounts in my 57 Wagon and install a side motor mount kit. I have a stock appearing rear mount radiator in the car right now and I want to move it to the front of the core support, are there any problems related to this side motor mount and radiator swaps?
Starting to race the car more and want to make improvements.

Get the new style Earle Williams side mount kit. Stock location or 3/4" forward with the same parts. They always fit. But they must be welded, which is a problem for some. The other good thing about the new style EW kit is that it doesn't use the old school rubber/metal mounts which are not so good for quality any more. It uses a simple cylindrical bushing.

If they are still available, I put in the McGaughy side motor mounts which can be welded or bolted in (some frame drilling required).
As for the radiator, on the '55 & '56 there is a v8 core support (rad on engine side) and a I6 core support (rad on bumper side). I assume both are available for '57, but my memory is on hiatus at the moment.
What I don't follow in your thread is do you think you have to mount the rad on the grill side to use the side motor mounts? My '56 now has the side mounts and I'm still using the v8 core support.

Side motor mounts are available from several places, Eckler's, Performance Online, etc. You probably want the ones that bolt on and keep the engine in the stock location.
Moving the radiator is easy, Eckler's sells the metal plates the allow you to move the radiator to the outside of the core support. you will need new, longer hoses as well.

Whichever mounts you choose, I'd suggest NOT moving the engine forward, unless you want to modify a dozen or so things, such as driveshaft length, shifter/clutch linkage, exhaust, fuel line, etc. Then you always risk headers hitting Pitman and idler arms, as well as oil pan hitting center link before full right and left steering lock.
Seems this "moving the engine forward" deal started in the 80s or 90s as a way to make a large cap HEI distributor clear the firewall. IMO, it's like burning down the house to kill a mouse.

Thanks guys, I do not want to move the engine forward and in looking at the engine bay I see I may not have to change the location of the radiator. I was looking at the side mount kit that Eklers had available. I have never had a problem with Eklers as far as parts are concerned! Where did you purchase the other brand mounts!

If you've never had a problem with Eckler's you've never bought much from them. They will let you down some way someday. If nothing else, restrict your purchases to sale items because somebody will always have a better everyday price. Often when they discount something, the price just goes down to everyone else's price. The other thing you need to do with Eckler's is ask if they have it in stock because they won't tell you.
You can buy the Earle Williams mounts direct from them. They have their own forum here.

Maybe I missed it in another thread but what engine are you running? A stock 283 won't take side mounts. I have a 350 in my 57 and used the McGaughy mounts, they went in easy and there were good instructions. I have the stock radiator in the V8 position with about 3/4" clearance between fan and core. I chose to weld in the mounts but as stated you could bolt 'em in as well.

When you move the rad to the 6 position there is no place for the rad hose on a center rad inlet, as the air dam is only relieved for the 6 rad which has the inlet on the side. Here is how I modified my hood dam by adding another relief in the center, good day.

Just to show off, here is some dash cam video from the Hunnert Car Headsup at Greatlakes Drag way in Union Grove Wi. This is the reason I want to switch to side mounts. This run I ran 14.35, with better traction, tires and some linkage adjustments I bettered my times by more then a second from last year! Best time this year 14.23.

when I did my new motor in 2006, I moved it 3/4" forward - it set off a series of other issues.
the radiator is in the V8 position, but the fan was too deep in the shroud to cool properly, so I put a pusher fan on it. Note that I have a Vintage air system on it that was design for the V8 position and it would require it to be "re-plumbed" as would the automatic (it was a 4 speed car that I changed to an automatic overdrive - it is a daily driver). In the end, I should have left the motor in its original position.

That's my recommendation too, I've visited the William's shop, and they do high quality work. I have some of their stuff stashed away for my '55 hardtop project, when I get to it! I will be using their side mounts for a 350 and 6 sp setup, stock position.
