I'm lucky enough to have had a friend who works at a paint and body shop offer to paint my '51 for me, but both of us are unsure of just how much primer, paint, top coat, etc. to order. I'm going root beer with pearl.

I've got a '51 Styleline Deluxe Sport Coupe, so if anyone has painted theirs recently, or something similar in size - how much of these would you recommend I buy? I'd rather have too much than too little, obviously, but I don't want to have so much extra that it's ridiculous.

Thanks!

You have a friend at a body shop and he doesn't know how to estimate paint?

It depends on what type of paint you intend to use (BC/CC or single stage) and sometimes what brand. Your paint supply store can also help you estimate how much you will need. Your paint supply store can also mix up more paint with your exact recipe if you run out, provided it is a standard recipe in their books (or you record the recipe if custom). Obviously it is better to have your paint all mixed together in the same pot so that your color is all the same across the vehicle, but it is possible to color match paint if you run out.

But, it is a bit more difficult to match pearl, so if I were you, I'd keep the pearl out of the color until you get the car covered with your base color. Then mix the pearl into your last topcoat and mix some into your first clear coat - so that you can match the color if you run out before you cover the car. It is better to do pearl this way anyway, because it ends up looking better.

You also want to use a dark primer under your paint, so that you use less color to completely cover the car. Primer is cheap (relatively), paint is expensive.

How much primer you use depends on how much bodywork there is to do. If you are going to use 2K primer over the base primer so that you can sand the body perfectly smooth - that will depend again on how much bodywork you have to smooth out.

A 51 is about a car and a half, compared to modern day cars.

If you haven't had anything painted recently - you will be utterly shocked at how much quality paint, primer and other supplies cost now. Be ready for the sticker shock.

Additionally, doing the jambs, edges, under deck lid etc. can add 30% to twice as much material depending on how slick you want it to be.

Since you say "rootbeer pearl" I'm assuming you are using Bc/cc but, when you say "pearl", do you mean tri-coat?

Also as mentioned by Vaughn, different mfg's base will cover different. Different lines within say PPG will cover different.

What particular line/mfg are you considering ?

Best case scenario is what your Painter is used to.

Sorry, should have specified, cause that does make him sound a bit incompetent, doesn't it? He actually works at a shop in Windsor, Ontario, and I live in Michigan. He's unable to cross the border because he has no passport, so he hasn't actually seen the vehicle in person. I sent him photos and rough dimensions, but he actually requested that I ask around on forums, because he's never painted anything older than an '03 or something and he didn't want to tell me the wrong thing, so I figured I'd check with people more familiar with the classics. He had guessed it was going to be more than he was used to, so I'll let him know about the 1.5 cars in relation to newer vehicles comparison.

Looking into it more, it does seem like tricoat will be my best option, because I was planning on keeping the BC standard in case of needing to color match in the future, so it does make sense to keep the pearl out of the BC equation. This goes to show how little I know about paint, so I do appreciate the advice/help, I don't get to talk to my friend a whole lot, so when he started explaining these things to me he was in a rush and I had no idea what he was saying, let alone what to ask to have him clarify.

I'm still looking for a root beer that I'm in love with, so haven't decided on a manufacturer yet, wanted to see what I was looking at in terms of what to order before making a final decision, too.

Thanks for the help, guys, sorry for my utter ignorance when it comes to any and all things paint, ha.

I painted my '51 Bel Air 2 tone in Feb. Its hard to "guesstimate" how much primer to use(spray on sand off) As far as paint.....I used 1 qt of gray sealer(all Nason products btw) over the final sanded primer on the lower body, and Maybe 1/2 qt of white sealer on the top.
I used 7 qts of the copper colored paint on the lower body, doorjambs, firewall, inside the trunk, underside of the trunk lid,and hood, dash, and all the interior moldings.(still have about 2 oz for touch ups)As far as the roof,I used 1 qt of white. Then the clear coat....almost 2 gals. This is with 3 coats of paint,3 coats of clear.
I hope this gives you an idea of what it will take.
