Picked up a new toy today! Saw someone on duallyscene posting a craigslist link from Dallas/Fort Worth area and I immediately fell in lust. Here's a couple of the seller's pics:

So you might be asking yourself, what is Richard doing posting about his 1958 dually in the 88-98 section?

Because the body is sitting on a 1994 C3500 chassis (with a 6/8 static drop), complete with 6.5TD and NV4500 5-speed.

The dash has even been modified to accept the '94 cluster, and the '94 tilt column has been installed. The guy that built it (Chris D in Burleson) used the factory '94 harnesses to wire the truck up.

It runs and drives, and has current registration using year-of-manufacture plates. Has some issues that need to get resolved for it to be a reliable driver, and it's definitely in the "rat" category but man this truck is seriously cool. I'll be posting updates when I can; my free time these days is severely limited so progress will probably be slow!

No way Jose! No wrecker unit for this one. This truck is for PLAY, not work.

Put the fenders back on, removed the late model center caps (I think it gives it a stealthier look) and peeled the "Monster" logo sticker off the rear window. All little stuff but I think it helps.

Whatta face!

Then took it down the road to add some more diesel, don't know if the gauge is accurate yet and didn't wanna trust it. Actually running pretty good despite the engine issues. Need to grab my GPS and see how close the speedo is, seems way off, reading too slow.

I think it's hilarious that you are now a 6.5L owner Will you stick it out with the diesel for awhile, or are you planning an engine swap already?

I like the truck, but you've got to do something about that steering column and wheel..... the wheel just looks way out of place, to me.

454 - we'll see about the diesel. It was the ONE thing about the truck that almost had me blowing it off completely. It doesn't run right, possible bad injection pump, but hard to say without some troubleshooting.

Definitely agreed on the steering wheel. I'll keep the tilt column but the stock wheel is going; I've got another Grant black leather/aluminum wheel just like the one in my '94 ext cab that I'll put in and see how I like that.

John - yep the stack is straight pipe, no muffler. This truck is all kinds of loud. He also included a turndown that I could install instead so that it dumps under the truck, but what fun is that? I'm not usually a "stacks are cool" kinda guy, but the fact that this one is rusty and decrepit, makes me love it!

I expected that you'd keep the column (I would), but could you paint it another color, to make it blend in more?

That 6.5L is all mechanical isn't it? No PMD?

Thanks Nick, it's been pretty fun so far, other than the walking back home to get the wrecker.

454- nope '94 is first year for electronic. I wish it was mechanical!

very nice truck. I love that generation nose.
Also love the 6.5l. Hardest part is the IDM but other than that the engine is pretty bulletproof.
Pretty basic. Best of luck and cant wait to see it complete.

Naw, just working my a$$ off! No time for anything else...I've done very little other than swap out the stock '94 steering wheel for a smaller Grant unit (same exact black leather/3 spoke aluminum as in my '94 ext cab; I had an extra) so it doesn't sit so close to the shift knob. As far as that knob goes, if you're a fingertip shifter it works great, if you're the "rest the palm on it" it's definitely a shocker!

Oh, and I noticed the IAT was installed with teflon tape, it wasn't much, but I removed it and cleaned up the threads just in case. Didn't seem to make any difference.

Next on the list will probably be buying front tires as the ones on it are P-series standard load tires! They're also only 28" tall, I might go to a 30" tire if it will fit in there - thinking a 215/85/16 to go a little taller and a little narrower, in an E load to support the diesel, and should add an inch to the ground clearance of the lower control arms. Currently they are really in harm's way. I love low, but I also don't like to drive slow!

Also need to replace all the flat glass as every bit of it is busted to hell! Seller provided a box of goodies - new window regulators, new channel that goes between the vent window and window glass, window channel rubber, and a few other minor items.

Other balloons I'm floating to see if they sink:

- Talking with a friend of mine about bagging it. Nothing crazy, just a straightforward job to raise it a little bit for highway driving, but designed to be firm at low ride height so it still rides well when dropped. I hate seeing bagged trucks that have to be lifted ALL the way up just to have good ride quality. My control arms are already narrowed so steering when low isn't an issue.

- Considering swapping it over to '93 mechanical injection. There's a few engines for sale locally that if I had the room to keep them, I'd have already bought the stuff. As it is, I can barely squeeze past the '94 ext cab to get to my toolboxes.

Richard, are you planning on sticking with the rat rod look or where you planning on cleaning it up and paint? From your description with the rusted stack sounds like you are staying with the rat rod and just fixing mechanical and drivability. My only complaint is the bed, as in it is non exsistant. Any plans to put a real usable bed in there?

For now definitely planning on keeping it rough, one reason is I love how it looks, other reason is it needs a lot of bodywork before it could be painted and I don't care to tie up a bunch of downtime in it. Rather get it running/driving right and enjoy it.

As far as the bed, I do intend on making some panels to be able to use it. With that large notch in place, best I'll be able to do will be front and rear compartments around the notch, just something so I can carry misc. items. Maybe in the future a cover for the notch itself, so that the bed appears "completed."

Got the front wheels popped off now and heading down to the tire shop.

I wonder how well a 12 valve would fit in that thing. You know you can get motor mounts that are a direct bolt for it.

to bad i dont think the Michelin supper single tires are in a low enough profile for it think a nice fat wide rubber in rear would look smooth. think few rattle cans will help clean it up for time being give it that good ole boy, red neck rat rod look. she has a lot of possibilities. looks good and with minor cost can be a fun ride from looks of it. i cant say i seen a dualy like it before but i like.

Trust me; I've already considered it. One plus to the '58 body is an enormous amount of hood -height- clearance, a downside would be a narrower engine bay. I'm tempted to say a 12V should fit but not having ever measured one out, I'd be nervous to bet money on it.

Width is never an issue on a 12 valve, it is always the length of the motor because it is an inline 6.

However since it is roughly the same size as a Chevy inline 6, is suspect it would fit just fine.

454 would be great... The rat rod look would be nice to keep, flat black paint, some pin striping, foux patina, it would look clean... The hardest part is making it not look like a hodge podge of different era parts, I think the original gauge cluster would look better.... but thats me, I'm a stickler... The truck would definitely look better a little bit higher off the ground, but since it isn't 4x4 you know she wont be going off road lol.... The bags are great, we have them on our 1 ton ford, and it really helps to smooth out the ride, as much as possible.
