Hi!

I have some questions that contains my beat up 1949 Styleline Business Coupe, Im from Sweden so I hope you can excuse my sometimes lousy english but please bear with me:)

My first of all question: Is it an old classic move to change the driveline from 216+3speed and instead mount 235,3speed+Truckstell overdrive??

Second Question: Where does the "new" driveline original come from?? The preowner imported the car from the US and he thinks its from an 56Chevy truck, Can this be true?

Third Question: Does anyone know someone who have sold this coupe to Sweden?? The guy that have made all these "Changes" does hardly know anything about rebuilding and improve a car!

Anyway, I hope someone can help me with these questions an guide me through this "Re-do, Do-right restoration/custom!

Replacing a 216 is very common. They are very durable but once they are worn out it is much easier to replace it with a 235, which after the '53 powerglide engine were all full oil pressure. Not sure if the '53 PG engine had insert rod bearings though. Chevy used the 235 through 1962 and with a few modifications will "bolt-in" any '49-54 car.
There are some letters and numbers stamped on the engine block near the distributor. These would identify the original use for the engine. A '56 truck engine with the 3 speed and overdrive would be very desirable.
As far as knowing who imported it to Sweden I couldn't even guess. The department of motor vehicles would be a good place to start, tracing the owners back to the importation of the car.
BTW welcome to Chevy Talk. Ask away.

Thanks for replying!

Yeah i know a little about the engines an such but I am most of all interessed if this driveline change is a "classic" thing to do or if its a pretty rare procedure... My own oppinion is that I guess its a pretty big operation to change to this driveline because of the closed driveline, and if its from an 56 pickup truck, does they have the same wheelbase??

I thank once again for the hospitality and hope that we all can help each other with restorations and rebuilding these wonderful cars! Im a little angry that I never have searched for these type of forum before because I really would have a lot of helping from this page, for instance I have already rebuilt the front end with a bit of struggles!!:P

It's rare only because the Truckstell Overdrives are rare. Otherwise, it's not so rare. Lots of '49 to '53 Chevy's were repowered with later model 235's over the years.

Can you post some pictures of the unit, especially the overdrive?

Pics in general are always welcome. I'd be very interested in pics of the overdrive unit.

First, your "beat up" ride looks very nice from where I'm sitting.

Second, I'm not familiar with the overdrive you have but assume that the car has been converted to a open drive or the engine/trans were pushed forward in the frame to connect to the enclosed drive. I've seen a couple of v8/350 turbo conversions done this way and they were very bad drivers due to the shift of weight over the front wheels. If the enclosed drive is still there I assume you wish to go back to the original set up. If it has been converted to a open drive...your options are very, very wide!!!

Well, a picture can lie alot you know... It fooled me when I bough it:P The car still has the enclosed driveline sadly... But I am thinking of changing the rear axle, mount a 350automatic with a adapterplate i've got (still using the inline 235) and get an "open" driveline! What do you guys think of that?

I already have the adapter, but that looks like an interesting homepage:)

Gallery of my car

I have now taken some photos of the driveline and others!:) As you can se on the pictures it's a Truckstell Tip-Toe-Matic and its also in a drivable condition:) It leaks some oil also....:P
Sadly as you can see, the metall-work on the car is cut out with a gas welder and the new metall is mounted with only drilling-screwes....:( this is just some examples of the bad engineering on this car, for example the bodywork is under all thats accepted!! the "bondo" is either sanded to much or to little, all of the trims are dented, the bumpers are dented and rusty...

But oddly enough I have no intentions of getting rid of the car, Instead im gonna redo all of the bad repairs and make a wonderful Chevy of it!:)
