Hi all,
The water pump on my '33 Chevy seems to be leaking pretty badly. As best as I can tell, it's coming from around the pump shaft rather than the pump-to-block gasket.
It looks like the pump is similar to the Model As where it has a nut you can loosen and then you insert packing material (lead or teflon) around the shaft. But I can't seem to find any source for the packing material.
Can anyone tell me if (a) it does actually work this way, and if so (b) where I can find a packing kit?
Thanks,
Nick

If it is indeed made that way, have you checked the plumbing section of a well stocked hardware store? Water pump packing is water pump packing whether automotive or stationary pump.

you can also try the filling station.
if you cant tighten down the nut around the shaft to stop the leak most likely the shaft is worn were the packing would ride and no amount of packing will stop the leak. the filling station also sells rebuilding kits for pumps with a new impeller
