If it were up to you, which would you choose to put in a '56 chevy:
Muncie M-20
Muncie M-21
New Process A833 (http://www.classicjunkyard.com/new_process_a833.htm)
I'm running a stock 3 speed OD now, picked up a A833 to swap in. It should put the shifter in a good spot in front of the bench seat. It will require putting in a tranny support which I got from Speedway.
But there's a guy with some muncies for sale nearby, one of those would swap right in w/o the tranny support but I'd have to get the Hurst shifter.
The rear end is a 3.70 stock rear end.

On the M20 and M21 the gear ratio and the ratio spread between the gears other than that they are pretty much the same
A833 is a lot cheaper to setup than a M20/M21

What about a Saginaw 3 speed overdrive? I use those in my 57's with some linkage modification.

That's what I have now, there's no syncho on 1st gear. It's not much fun to drive.
I already have the A833 tranny, bellhousing, shifter sitting on the floor in my garage. Also the crossmember for the tranny support, so it would be supported by the stock front supports and the tranny crossmember.
The A833 tranny has almost the same exact gear ratios as the TH700 OD tranny. Can anyone speak to the combo of this, a 327, and the 3.70 rear end on 215-75-r15 tires?
But now I see a muncie m-20 and m-21 for sale locally. Those would bolt right in with no crossmember, I'd just have to buy the special hurst shifter to clear my stock bench seat.
Too many options.

Go for the M20 just because it has a lower first gear and it's better for a heavy car. It also helps if you want to go with a 3.08 rear gear because you won't have to slip the clutch as much when you take off from a stop. If you have a stout engine it won't make much of a difference which first gear you have.

The A833 gear ratios are 3.09, 1.67, 1.00, 0.73 so it would actually be better at getting the car up and moving. The M-20 has 2.56, 1.91, 1.48, 1.00 gearing.
I have 3.70 rear end, no plans of changing that, just had it rebuilt actually.
