Rotella has about the content of regular oil did 15-20 years ago.

From what I've been told, anyway.

Oils still have zinc much reduced and it does not make any difference with the valve system in the 50s car as they do not need it. For a new cam yes but daily use not necessary. There probably was no zinc in the oil in the 50s any way. Came along with higher compression engines and higher cam load to to increased valve spring tensions.

I run Valvoline VR-1 racing oil. Has 1400 PPM of zinc and 1300 PPM of phosphorous. Not all Rotella has a high level of zinc as now diesels have catalytic converters. The Rotella needs to have a rating of C-4 to have an acceptable level of zinc.

I am thinking more in terms of use of these additives in newer & or hotter engines compared to the stock 216/235.

fwiw, I'm using Rizlone additive in my 235 with a Comp Cams cam. After running it all last summer, I inspected the lifters over the winter and all looked good.

I use the VR1 in my 350. Right after I built it, before I knew about zink, I rounded off a cam lobe. I didn't break the cam is right so maybe it was that, maybe it was the oil I was using with not enought zink but why take a chance for the difference in price.

Good to know Bob. All the guys working on their rides has pushed me to take my 53 apart (laying all over the shop right now) and start over. I've got a rebuilt 350 on the stand and want to help it all I can.

I added the zinc additive from comp cams and am running a high mileage oil that has zinc. Mobil oil. So far no issues, but only have about 500 miles +/- on engine.

There is enough zinc in regular 10W-30 oil tp protect your cam and lifters.
The exception would be if you have a new cam as many new cams are of poor quality and they need all the help they can get.
Also too much zinc is not a good thing either.
