Hello everyone.
Got a 94' P30 chassis RV w/ tbi 454. Started it up today and let it warm up for 3-4 minutes and all seemed well. I then drove the rig a few hundred yards across the storage lot yard, noticed the idle was rough and the check engine light were on. I then killed the motor and proceeded to wash the vehicle (which was my original intention for driving it across the lot).
After washing it I fired the motor and it sputtered for a few seconds like it was gonna turn over and run, but no dice. Now it just cranks with no signs of life
I pulled the air cleaner cover and it appears its getting a good spray of fuel from both injectors. I can see the fuel spray and smell it.
I also pulled the right rear plug and was able to see spark when I grounded it to the block and cranked it.
It appears to have fuel and spark and I'm at a loss here. I've searched the web and it appears the ignition control modules are suspect for an issue like this, but I hate to start throwing parts (and cash) at an unknown problem.
Any ideas where to begin my testing?
Thanks.

You can rule out the Ignition Control Module. If that were bad you would not have fuel and/or spark. If you have one or the other, the ICM is good. Have you inspected your your distributor for anything that looks suspicious and loose wires? Pull the cap and roter and look at the contacts for corotion and inspect the spark plug wires for damage. Also search for possible broken wires, connectors and anything electrical that is damaged.

I went back this morning to begin troubleshooting and it fired right up. Took it around the block and it ran great and no check engine light.
Something got wet. Cheap fix, but frustrating.
Thanks for the reply!

Thats great! FYI- WD40 is great at getting water out of connectors and electrical stuff.

When it was idling rough and the check engine light came on it should have set a trouble code.
In the FAQs sticky thread at the top of the board there are links to instructions for retrieving the trouble code without a scan tool.
Read the trouble code and let us know what you find. If nothing else it will give you some direction if next time it leaves you stranded somewhere.
Welcome to the board!
For those of you that are wondering why you are not getting replies to your thread:
Did you give the model, year, engine, fuel system type, and transmission information?
If the it has been altered from stock let us know about that too. |

Yep. Good advice.
I know something triggered the CE light prior to it getting wet, so I know I'm not done yet. My only hope for today was to pray to get it started and limp it back to its spot in the storage yard. When it fired and idled clean I was one happy guy.
I looked and looked again for water on any electrical components I could see yesterday and they all appeared dry. No denying the truth though... it was wet.
I'll bring a paperclip next time and see what codes I can pull.
Thanks!

You don't need to wait until next time to read the code.
The code should still be in the memory until the truck goes through 50 run cycles, unless you have disconnected the battery or pulled the fuses.

Thanks. I pulled a code 54 from it
(54 - Fuel pump relay circuit low voltage)
It also fired up and ran perfectly today. No check engine light.
Are these relays known for going bad? I haven't seen the check engine light come on again.
