Hello Gentlemen (and Ladies),
I am working on a 41 chevy. One of the popular drive train conversions is to a SBC-700R4-S10 Diff. I was told that it is possible to detemine the diff. ratio by using a code that is on a label in the glove box or on a tag on the diff. Can anyone explain more clearly the location of the codes and how to translate?

Yes, using the glove box RPO codes. You can determine gear ratios. The most common ratio is 3.42. Do you. have the codes?

gchemist,
Thanks for the response. No, I do not have the codes. I would also like to know if the S10 has the 5 on 4 3/4 lug pattern.

One way to check ratios is to jack up the car and put the trans in its highest gear for a 1.1 ratio, turn both rear tires one full rotation at the same time and count how many times your driveshaft turns. It,s not exact but real close.
3 1/2 turns would be around a 350 gear and so fourth. It works!

Axle ratio by RPO code on the sticker in the glove box.
GM1 = 2.59
GU2 = 2.73
HC2 = 2.76
HE3 /G44 = 3.07
GU4 = 3.08
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42
GT4 = 3.73
GT5/GT8 = 4.10
HC4 = 4.56
For those of you that are wondering why you are not getting replies to your thread:
Did you give the model, year, engine, fuel system type, and transmission information?
If the it has been altered from stock let us know about that too. |

As a side note, G80 is the much maligned Posi/Gov-Loc. Mine is still going strong at 239K.

Since you probably have to change the oil in it, look for a stamp on the ring. It will have the number of teeth stamped on it.
