Is anyone aware of any 62-65 409 motors that were rated <300 HP? I have my 409/425 (or so I thought when bought at auction).
I have my 63-409 at a repair shop and am being told this particular motor although it's a true 409, the HP rating is ~250 HP. Apparently he's looked up some of the engine ID's, (casting ID's??) and determined this is a "dealer replacement motor" from the mid 60's?
Something sounds "weird" aboout this and I was hoping to gain some additional knowledge prior to picking up the car on Monday.

Lots of info here
http://www.348-409.com/general.html
Short answer, there were 348's with less than 300 hp, but the lowest 409 was 340 hp

Never heard of it before. 340 HP 409, yes. 250 or 300 Hp, don't believe so. 340 horsepower is the lowest I'm aware of. 348 engines which look like 409 engines might be that low.
The "pros" will be here soon to give you better advice.
What did the shop find wrong with the engine? I believe you said earlier it had very little power.

Maybe it's a truck motor, weren't they rated lower?

It could be a truck block with 690 or 583 heads and dual quad intake. That's not a bad thing although people will disagree with me. What are the numbers stamped on the pad at the front of the engine?

My '65 heavy duty truck brochure lists a 252 horsepower 409 that was in the C80 series trucks. The c.r. is 7.75:1

I'll confirm Monday, but it appears (based on the codes) it may be a 409 truck motor rated at 252 HP.
As far as the "no power" issue, the carbs (dual quads) were both in need of a rebuild. They were leaking gas into the manifold and basically flooding the engine. Compression test performed and all checked out fine (no head gasket issues).
I'm trying to find additional info on why a 252HP rated motor would have (2) 4 bbl carbs (Carter AFB).

alot of guys in late 60's would swap the oil pans on the 348 motor to make it look to be a 409. the only real diff . on looks was dip stick on had on the passanger side the other the drivers side

Good point. You probably want to check the casting number to see if you have a 409 or 348.

My 65 C-80 is rated at 252 in the books but the data plate in the cab says 215. I think the cab plate is referring to brake horsepower. The 409 in my 63 Impala was a truck block also and the suffix code is QD. The easy way to tell a truck block is by the chamfered lip in the top of the cylinder.

Checking previous threads from the summer and wondered if you got the engine situation worked out?
