Is it unusual for the starter and alternator to fry at the same time? Should I expect other electrical trouble down the line which hasn't shown itself yet? Thanks

Yes it can happen. Rare though. Usually a serious power spike or bad ground can ruin both components. Check the condition of the battery power wire. Same for the alternator wire.
