Why is there a ground stud connection on the rear of my alternator ('66 Chevy)? I thought the alternator was grounded through the mounting brackets to the block. I have never used the ground stud, it's just there.

Some GM cars use that stud for a support bracket for the back of the alternator, such as my 66 Corvair, and some use it to connect the battery negative cable to.

I actually ran mine to a 'ground bus' on the firewall.
