But yes...... they are in EXTREMELY bad shape.

Yes, those are the box braces. I will be replacing mine too. Very nice trunk work!!

Thanks guys, They were in such bad shape I wasn't sure what they were! LOL!
When I got the sheet metal for the trunk I picked up the braces just in case.
I will post photos when i get them in.
Here is a before shot.

Rob, your pictures was a pretty good see-thruu illustration, of the box brace area, not kidding.
I just started the trunk work at my -62.
I just cant figure out how the parts come together in this area, at my car, its been replaced the wrong way, or gone.
I add a illustration of what i thought could be a horisontal cut thru the middle of the box brace.
Im sorry for the thin text, i havent figure out how how to make it thicker yet.
Anybody PLEACE tell us whats wrong, if not original design.
I just cant figure out.
