I disconnected my heater core a little while back on my 63 as it had sprung a leak. For some reason the cab of my car still reaks of coolant. Could it be the core still mounted in the car retains coolant causing the smell?

I wouldn't think so. It should have evaporated or leaked out by now. You might check the carpet and clean it real good. Make sure nothing is gowing underneath it.

Frank:

Let us know what you find. It it was my car, I'd also blow air through the core just to make sure nothing is in there. It may take some cleaning with some smell good soap to get the stink out.

It sounds to me you had a lot of fluid leak on the floor.

Ethel Glycol (antifreeze) is next to impossible to get out of a carpet. You would save yourself a lot of trouble and time by replacing the carpet. In the end, you will be doing that anyway. I speak from experiance...

Before you replace carpet you might try,

Grinding up some speedy dry into a powder and laying it under the carpet for a few days that should absorb any residual/minuscule coolant.

Also your local HVAC wholesaler will have some anti smell stuff(AKA?????) they use for oil spills.
Good luck

I checked it out today and everything seems to be good and dry under the carpet. I did however notice that there is a dark stain around were the floor mat sits on the carpet. Looks like dampness but I don't think it's wet, possibly a stain from the leaked coolant? Any how I rolled all the windows down on it and left the carpet peeled back in that corner to let it vent out.

There's some bags filled with some anti moisture stuff you can put in your car to help keep the moisture out. I remember someone on this forum was talking about them a good while back. Anyone know what they are called?

Damp Rid?

Also, if you've had a long time leak, the carpet and padding may be full of mold, spores, fungus, bacteria, etc.

Clean it well, try a garden shop for some Yarrow branches with the leaves still on. Along with charcoal it might clear the air.

I've heard charcoal and/or fresh ground coffee work to absorb odors from the air in vehicles.

There could still be coolant in the heater housing under the core. When you replace the core, wash the housing with soap and water. Antifreeze does not evaporate like water.

anti freeze doesn't evaporate, only the water in the anti freeze. If it has been a long while, the water is gone, leaving only the concentrated anti freeeze behind.

Thanks all. I got a bunch of charcoal and stuffed it in a bag and set it on the floor boards. Planning on shampooing the carpet or maybe febreezing the life out of it than taking it on a long cruise down the hwy with all the windows down after. Hope it helps. Smell has somewhat disappeared since rolling down windows and spraying febreeze in there.
