Just talked to a friend that has a 69 396 el camino. We put the motor in it about 6 years ago. It was fresh and pro built by a local shop. The motor sat indoors, complete for several years before we installed it.
Hydralic cam. On the first start up we fired it up, checked for oil pressure set the idle above 2000 and ran it for 20 min.
The car has maybe a couple hundred miles on it now and the #8 intake lobe has gone flat.
Did I miss something?

not being there to check every factor and clearance issue thats a very difficult or impossible to answer question, but read thru these links

while you may occasionally have a soft cam core its far more common to have cam lobes wear from improper lubrication or improper clearances

after reading so many horror stories about cam failure ,i called comp cams as they are my favorite cam.they said with new motors it can definately happen, but they had a new process called nitride coating that basicly extra hardens lobes.this is an extra cost option, but they had experienced good results with almost no failures.by appearance cam lobes are complety black.so far after a few months no complaints.

You know about the ZDDP missing in the oil, right?

My latest thing is to use Joe Gibbs Driven BR-30 break-in oil for the first few hundred miles, and then switch to Valvoline VR-1 -- not the synthetic or "not street legal" version, but this one:

May I ask why you don't like the synthetic version?
I have been running the VR1 synthetic and have no issues. It has "high" ZDDP levels plus it's synthetic and it has a detergent package for "street" use change intervals.
The blue color of it is interesting too.
It seems real good to me and it's the choice I made in this day and age of oil issues. BUT, my choices are not always right and I appreiciate any input anybody has about this.
