Hi ya ll, I'm new to this forum. I'm looking at buying a 1985 elky. Has 4.3 v6, auto trans. Car starts and runs fine, revs up good. the when you put it in gear engine stalls, or dies. I understand the trans has been changed. Any ideas what might be the problem? Many thanks for your input. ( car has been sitting for 3-4 years. )

Sure you have enough tranny fluid in?? If so, put your left foot on the brake, and right foot on accelerator. Rev the engine to about 1.5k and put into gear. If it stalls, you have a tranny (whatever kind of tranny you have) problem.

Thanx for the reply Bruce. It appears not to be a trans problem. It is fuel related. I did buy it. I'm going to drop the tsnk, replace filter and rebuild throttlebody. Got it running pretty smooth, and going under it's own power. ( Did have to add atf ) What happens now is runs good for a few miles, then starts to cut out and stall even going down the freeway. Pull over let it sit a few minutes and starts up and goes for a few more miles, then repeats. I'm thinking bad f/filter and bad gas. Any ideas anyone? Thanx for the responses. Car has sat for 3-4 years)

Could be the fuel boiling in the lines if you have any fuel lines close to a heat source.
More than likely, there is some trash in the tank that is getting sucked up to the pump sock int he tank. When the car shuts off, the suction is lost, the debris drops off and the car runs again until it is sucked up again.

Thanx, for the ideas. I think I am going to pull the tank, and clean. Replace the fuel filter and put a service kit in the TBI. Check for plugged cat converter. Someone suggested the pick up coil in the dist maybe at fault.

Less likely the pick up coil than the distributor module. They will heat up and cut out and then work again when they cool down a bit. I didn't think about that at first. Might be cheap insurance to replace the pick up coil, cap rotor, module and condensor before pulling the tank.

Thanx, I seem to be getting ideas along the same line. I can replace the whole dist for less than $85.00 with a lifetime reman. Might be the fastest way to go. Thanx for all the help.
