Well Guy's. Something tells me I'm in big trouble here. Can anyone tell me if there's an easy solution for this problem on my 55 Nomad. One of the two bolts that clamps my steering column to the dash, under the instrument cluster,on the right side, is stripped. Is there an easy way to replace this bolt without taking the whole dash apart? (It has a flat head on top of the bracket and I'm not sure if it's pressed in or threaded in)Is there a way to cut new threads on this bolt without trying to take it out. Is there such a thing as a self threading nut?? Help Help Help!!!! Thanks, Mel

I think that bolt is spot welded to the pedal bracket. You may have to cut it off, drill it out and put a standard bolt in from the top. .... Link to bolt.

If the threads are just damaged, you can renew them with a threading die, if it clears the sheet metal. A hex die is usually 1" hex, you could use a 1" socket on it if it clears.
There are also "chaser dies" which are essentially "thread cutting nuts". And smaller than a regular threading die.
Or you could even use a thread file.

Guys,
Sorry about the long delay in replying.
First I tried Rick_L's suggestion.
Bought the hex dye. Couldn't get the 1" socket to clear the sheet metal. Then, I had a smaller socket welded to the dye and thought I had it made. No such luck. The bolts were too far gone.
Then I tried Acardon's suggestion, but I had to wait about a week so a friend could come over with an extra set of hands.
This method was very successful.
I'm finally back on the road.
Thanks for both your efforts.
