Went to goodguys car show and what started with peer pressure to do the autocross a couple of times turned into who could go fastest to beat the last time. 10 times later it was tine to go home, put car on lift, tighten up sway bars, run QA1's up tighter and lower rear tire pressure. The following morning and first time out resulted in this video. So much for over thinking all that stuff. I might have been the only one to spin out, do a 360 and never hit a cone. I think I went about 16 times and never broke anything. I couldnt be happeir with the car so far, next stop, drags.

Cole,
That looked like it was a lot of fun. Would you have done any thing differently regarding the car set up?
I have never done that but I would probably just go out there in an as is set up.
Just Curious.

As you found out, autocross is not about horsepower, but handling and tires, but most importantly, driver. I've been autocrossing Corvettes since '79, and just autocrossed this past weekend. Lots of fun and cheap, plus you learn how and how not to drive in any given situation. I'm glad Goodguys has started autocrossing. It certainly humbles a lot of guys who think their huge engine cars are killers on the road. It's pretty embarrassing to get beat by a Miata. (a great autocross car BTW)

John, never having autocrossed a tri-5, I'm not sure what to expect, but I have autocrossed my '61 Corvette which is also a solid axle like a tri-5. First, if you don't have posi, you will get a lot of wheel spin on the inside tire. I don't know what tires you have, but I would run about 35-37psi in all the tires to start with. You want to bump the tire pressure up so that the tires don't roll over in the corners and you end up running on the side of your tire. We used to run 38-40 psi with street tires on my '69 Corvette. If the back end is loose, try dropping the front tires 2 psi, and if your car doesn't want to turn, not because you are going too fast, then drop the rear 2 psi. That's what we do with the IRS Corvettes, but I'm not sure if it applies to a tri-5, but that's where I'd start. Sway bars will definately help a tri-5. Give it a try. I've always said to beginners, I'll buy them a beer if they don't have fun, but it's hard to lie when you're smiling! Good luck.

I went out the first time in the same street trim i built just to get by in Denver rush hour traffic. I have what turned out to be decent setup for a good mix of street and still have fun doing this. I had lots of people come up and ask about the set up since I was doing so well against the camaros, vettes and mustangs. I have cpp dropped spindles, tube a arms, 500 steering box, QA1 coil overs and a helwig sway bar up front. In the back I have posies dropped springs, eldebrock shocks and helwig sway bar and 1 1/2 lowering blocks with spring pockets. Bowtiefan is right, too much power will get you in trouble if you cant keep good contact with the tires. My problem was no disipline and couldnt stay off the gas. I did have a few good passes where I stayed off the gas a little. It is addicting for sure.
This pic is the most lean it had.

As us autocrossers always say, slow down to go fast.
