All new front end and today finaly got the finaly part wrapped up with the tie rod ends. (went very smooth did not have a issue I was shocked came apart like butter including the sleeves)

So in the steering wheel side to side before wheel movement is about 1.5 inches - 3 inches is this good or still a bit loose. If loose still or on that side I can tighten the box up a bit. Im sure its never been touched in its 200k miles of life and has had large tires on it reasonable to think it might be a little wore.

Don't just tighten up on that one bolt with the jam nut. A lot of people think that's all it takes to adjust it. Forgive me if you know better.

I'm pretty sure we have the correct info posted here somewhere but I don't have time to check for it right now; getting ready to rush out the door to work.

I was not going to just go tighten it down do not worry. Ive read up alot on it but may be off still.

I figured I would take the most cautious info. To loosen the nut then turn the bolt in half turn at a time until slop was gone and but steering was not hard or tight the loosen a quarter turn. If that is still far off I wont be doing anything till tomorrow anyways if not later on that part so I have time to wait on the proper info.

I had around two or three inches of play in my steering. A quarter turn of the allen screw made a huge improvement. A half turn was too much. Thanks for the info.

Fellas...just turning that one bolt is not the correct method of adjustment. In fact often it can lead to premature further wear of the gearbox.

Here's the correct procedure, 2 pages from the factory manual -

That works pretty good. I left mine in the truck. I found some slop in the pitman arm and was going to replace it but while removing it to check the spline alignment, the lock washer fell off in two pieces. A trip to town for a washer and it's back together. No more "Dukes of Hazzard" driving(back and forth real fast).:toast:
