I have a 68 Impala that I am getting ready for AACA judging and I am down to getting the "correct" spare tire. I put rally rims with G70-15 thin white stripe tires on the car and they look great. Would the spare have been a matching rim and tire or would a regular steel rim and G70 tire be correct? I got a great link from someone that helped me with the tire choice but I cannot find anything about the spare. Thanks for the help

Spare should match. It should be a DC wheel and an 8.25 x 14 tire if a white stripe. The G series tires were available as a redline only I believe. I will have to check ordeing info from the Wilmington, De. plant.

This is what I have in mine, appears to look original its age and It looked like I was the 1st to ever remove it, although it's a 15" wheel and tire which is what I found my car with. Were 15" wheels an option with these cars? It also took forever to scrape off the black rubber backing from that original trunk mat that had adhered itself to the trunk pan.

Yes, That does appear to be a correct original spare (BF Goodrich or Uniroyal?), but it should be a numerical spare, not a HP G series tire. They did have a 15" stamped steel wheel option on the 68's. It would have come with a full wheel cover. It's a unique cover that was actually a Buick Riviera cover but had the center Buick crest replaced with a Chevy Bowtie. It's the cover you see on the white 68 SS 427 convert that is pictured in the 1968 full size brochure. That wheel is a drum brake only wheel. All Disc Brake cars in 68 used the rally wheel and all were 15x6 DC code wheels.

I know i kept it for a reason. I don't need it as I am not restoring, rather maintaining and upgrading my 68 as I believe they were built for 1 reason only ---to be driven. although garage queens are nice to look at and serve as part of history. I'm sure someone would want it to complete their show piece or survivor.

The '68 full-size Chevy was available with both G70-15 white stripe and red stripe tires.
G70-15 white stripe RPO PU3
G70-15 red stripe RPO PU4
info from GM '68 Heritage website. Website shows a revision for these tires as of Jan 1968 so an earlier '68 info printing wouldn't show it.
