I have a 1967 Chevy Impala with a 283 sbc. I despratley want to get her back on the road. I became tired of the troublesome points system, so I purchased an Accel 140003 HEI Super Coil to install. It came with the distributor and wires. I removed the old distributor prior to bringing the enging to TDC. Is there a tool I can buy to turn the engine to the proper position? Where do I attach (if at all) the two old wires that were attached to the coil?
Will I also need the 15 dollar accel connector? Where does it connect to, the ignition?
Any reference sites or resources you guys can provide would be much appreciated. I kinda feel stupid because its probably a fifteen minute job for many of you.
Thanks,
Shad

To fit and time the distributor you must first get #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke. The simplest way is to take out #1 plug and jam a piece of damp screwed up paper towel in the plug hole. Then turn the engine clockwise till the paper is forced out by compression. Keep turning till you notice the timing mark line up with TDC. You can turn the engine by turning the fan blades while pushing on the belt between the water pump and the crank or have a friend turn the flywheel from underneath while you watch the timing mark. Next fit the distributor. Put the distributor in the engine and hold it in its normal position with regard to the vacuum unit and its connection. Before it engages with the camshaft, rotate the rotor so its facing the front of the engine. Push the distributor down to engage the camshaft. The rotor will turn a bit, so when its engaged try to have the rotor facing the front of the engine. The distributor may not go all the way down because the oil pump which is driven by the end of the distributor is not engaged. To do this, hold the body of the distributor down while your friend cranks the engine with the starter. Now connect everything back up and the engine should start. With the vacuum line disconnected use a timing light to do a fine adjustment of the timing to manufactures specifications which I think is 4 degrees BTDC.
I am not an auto elect but it looks to me that you connect your primary wire on your car ( the white and orange wire and the yellow wire for the starter) to the red and yellow primary wire on the new coil. If there is another wire on the new coil it may be for a tacho.
