Ok, 1946 Chevy Fleetmaster with a 1954 235 . The 235's number says it's out of a sedan with a powerglide behind it. If I push on the engine, towards the passenger side, the engine moves about 4 to 6 inches. NOT GOOD! Anyway, realizing that the motor mounts are shot, I looked them up on three or four different websites and decided to get them at AutoZone, since all websites showed the same mounts. This morning, I crawled up under the 46 and the mounts that are on the engine are NOTHING like the ones on the web. The front mount looks to be one sigle mount, about 6 inches by 2 inches, held onto the motor with two bolts and onle one bolt attaching it to the frame.

The back engine mounts (on the bellhousing).....The one installed on the car are totally shot, with one of them missing the rubber altogether. Anyway, they look to be a 2-peice and don't really attach to each other, more like a bumper system. The ones that I got are like a 1 inch cube of rubber with a 1 inch wide by 1 and 1/2 inch long flat peice of metal on oppisite sides
Anybody have any help out there?

After a bit of research, it looks like on the front mount I have a hy-brid of a truck and car mount. Not sure about the aft mount, it doesn't resemble the truck mount at all.

To install the proper front mounts it will be necessary to drill holes in the lower flange of the front mounting plate.
For the side mounts you need the proper brackets that bolt to the passenger car flywheel housing - from 1937-1948.

I think you can stay with the front mount, if it is in good condition. But you need to come up with some mounts for the bell housing. You may have to make some brackets.

Front mount is totally wasted......rubber is gooey and dripping out.
I think I found the bellhousing mounts I need at Cheys of the 40's. I think they will work.
Anyway, all the mounts need changing, I'm gonna give it a look over this afternoon to see if I can drill the front plate in place.

I just pulled out the front mount. It was a mount for a pickup slightly modified by drilling a hole in the center and putting a long bolt down thru a short peice of pipe and then thru the front crossmember. The rubber was totally wasted.
The bellhousing mount are missing the rubber and it looks like they were acting as bumpers to limit the engine rotation. A real "jury-rig" if I ever saw one.
I have the correct mounts for the front now, and I need to get a long 7/16 drill to cut the holes in the mounting plate and that will get the front mount up to snuff. I'm still looking into the bellhousing mounts. Chevies of the 40s has one that looks like it will work with the brackets I have

Got the front mounts installed. Now the engine justs rocks a little (about 1/2 inch at the rocker cover)when revving it up or just pushing it sideways. Hopefuly the side mounts will take care of that when I get them and install them.

You may damage the new front mount if you operate the car with the broken side stabilizer mounts.

Jack:

You might want to check the mount under the rear end of the transmission as well. The one on my 48 was so rotten it fell apart. I managed to get a new one from a gentleman on the VCCA forum. My 48 was missing both bellhousing mounts as well. Brackets and rubber were both gone. I was able to find some NOS ones out of Virginia. Now that all her mounts are replaced/fixed, my 48 doesn't drive like a washing machine thats out of balance.

I'm not driving it until next weekend and the UPS truck should get here Wednesday. I should be good. The brackets are there, I just need the rubber bumpers for the bottom half, top half rubber is good. Should be about a 10 minute job to put the new bumpers on.

Engineer,
The tail mount looks serviceable. I think that was the only one that was. But, since I'm doing it, I guess I should do it all the way. I'll get the tail mount ordered and change that one next week.

Jack,
I have the front mounts and then the side mounts that bolt up to the bell housing on my '47 chevy. I just finished putting in this '59 235 motor this last winter. ( with the help of Keith and Bob). All the mounts are rubber cushioned. The rear mounts...bolt to frame and then bell housing. The rubber should be one piece. When I rev the motor I get a slight movement at the engine. I think that is normal.
Thanks
Dave

Jack:

Re: The tranny mount - there's a revised design for it that came out in 47 apparently. It doesn't use the steel U channel on top like the earlier design did. The newer version is the one I got for my 48.

Dave, I believe that is what is supposed to be on my 46. That's the type of rubber I ordered. The one that is on there right now looks to be uhh.. modified a little. I'll see what happens when the UPS man shows up.

Recieved my rear motor mounts and installed them this morning. Eng is rock steady now. When you shove on the rocker cover, the whole car moves instead of just the engine
