65-70 should all be close to the same.

the convertible will be stronger frame with some structural differences. the convertible will also have two extra body mounts you could cut off.

I would recommend a parts car. For a little more than the frame, you would get more parts you could save for your resto or sell to knock off from the price of the frame.

All 65-66 frames will work directly under your car. The convertible frame has two more body mount pads - just don't use them. Even a station wagon frame will work.

67 and newer, you will need to get the upper rear axle trailing arms since the mounting location is different than the 65-66.

I too am looking for a frame for my '66 vert. Mine is currently sitting on a mint non-vert frame, but I'd like to have the proper one. If anyone knows of one I'd be willing to purchase or trade frames with extra cash, etc.

Sorry for chiming in but the timing is great as i am looking at a 68 SS frame for my 66 Impala and take the plunge.
you will need to get the upper rear axle trailing arms since the mounting location is different than the 65-66.

What does this intale? Wouldn't have any pictures of this? Any other issues using a 68 frame? Thanks for any info.

The idler arm and drag link was improved begining in 1967, so that will be a difference also.

I would like to see the actual differences in the rear end upper control arm set ups, because we are running a 66 12 bolt in our 68.

On 67 and later years, the crossmember that the upper control arms bolt to is located farther back on the frame rails requiring shorter upper control arms.

Ok,I remember now we made our own upper control mounts to correct pinion angle,so that explains why it was off in the first place. We built that car 15 yrs or so ago so my memory has faded some.

As I remember, the 67 and newer upper arms are 2" or so shorter IIRC.

just an observation, and i know some of you try to keep your cars as original as possible but if i was running a 68 frame i would just use all 68 front and rear suspension parts including the rear end. to me that would be a lot simpler than cutting and moving brackets around.

From what I have read, the 65&66 frames are interchangable. BUT; the 66 frame is supposed to be stronger.

Welcome to ChevyTalk, redflags!

That's the rumor around the internet. I don't think there is any official proof!

According to the brochure, it seems like the '66 Hardtop Frames are a little different than the '66 Sedan Frames. Just would like to verify that as that would be something I wasn't aware of and would be curious to know exactly what the differences would be.

It could be the beefed-up '65 Caprice frame but I have no proof. The '65 GM/Chevy website lists the differences of the Caprice frame. Takes a few seconds to load..click on the blue down arrow at the page to start...scroll down to the Caprice page:

On page 18,1/23/12 (pimpala); the same thing was hashed around. Article, from Hemmings, says the 66 frame is heavier.
Don't know where they got their info from. could be out of the brochure also.
