This might seem dumb to some of ya but i noticed that a 55 chevrolet 210 i will be buying soon does not have a tranny mount on the 4 speed muncie. I crawled under the car to give the once over and noticed that where the transmission mount would be bolted to the tranny that there is nothing. Not even a cross member. Is this the way they are or is the car missing a little something? Thanks in advance for any help..........Mike

That's the way they were built.

They don't have a mount.. I also found this out as you did. I have a old jeep with a 327 and muncie 4spd. I have an addaptor for the transfer case which does have a mount location on it, but the trans itself does not. They were made that way.

The early Chevy motors bolted in front and 2 rear mounts on the bell housing ...............later models had only the 2 side motor mounts and the trans crossmember for support.

Thanks for the replies, i was getting a little nervous about my purchase thinking that something was really wrong with this picture. I looked around on line and found that you can buy a transmission crossmember for the 55 with some drilling required. The car has a powerful motor in it (400+ hp) I am a little concerned that a mount was not installed given the extra power she now has. It just does not look right. Do you or anyone else belief that this is something that i need to have done A.S.A.P.?

I run a 350 with a 5 speed. I have side engine and bell housing mounts. I also have a transmission mount. I did not fell comfortable with in just hanging out there.
Good luck!

If you have the bellhousing side mounts, you are just fine. Leave it as it is.

I bolted a 5 spd up to mine with no crossmember, I figured if the cast iron 3 spd could hang there for 50 plus years, a lighter aluminum case 5 spd should present no problem, although a crossmember certainly could do more good than harm, especially with higher HP and a heavier foot.

Thanks again for the answers. I do feel alot more at ease now. Agreed it does look wierd just hanging out there with no support. but then again like you said it had a heavier trans hanging out there for 50+ years. As of right now it would involve me having to re-route the exhaust system (x pipe) to accommodate a mount, something i will visit at a later date now thanks to the information i got at this site.....P.S I belong to other car sites and i appreciate the quick and accurate input given here by its members.
