I have several W1 Carter Carbs that I use on my 41 chev with 216 engine most all cause "low load surge" at higher speeds the surge smooths out, am also having "rich" slight run problems tail pipes soot a little milage 12-14 when I was a kid my 216's would get 20 with Carter and a bit less with the Rochesters. Any suggestions? Float level 1/2 inch idle smooth. Thanks Gary

Because you said you used several different W1 carbs and they all do the same thing I suspect the problem might not be all in the carb(s).

Check for vacuum leaks.
And advance the timing 6 degrees or so "off the ball" to compensate for todays' higher octane gasoline. Made a big difference in mine.

Good luck.

Seems like vacuum leak would screw up idle. How does octane differ from the mid 50's? Do you get any preignition ping? Thanks Gary

Hi Gary,
I've found that vacuum leaks can cause some strange problems that sometimes defy explanation. Easy enough to check for and eliminate vacuum leaks....so why not?

Here's how I set my timiing......set the octane selector to 0; with atiming light set the timing "on the ball"; then advance the timing with the octane selector to about 6 degrees advanced. You will need to play with the actual amount of advance with test drives to get it "just right". Too much advance and you will have trouble restarting the engine (it won't want to turn over easily). I'm running 6 degrees advance and I get no preignition pinging at all. Engine is much peppier and I average between 18 and 20 mpg. Back in the 40s octane ratings were in the mid to upper 70s and varied by gas company. That's why Chevrolet (GM) used the octane selector feature on the distributors, Today's octane rating for regular gas is 87 to 89 and is consistent between companies.

Thanks very much. I reinstalled the 49 carb that was on the car when I bought itI haVE HAD IT ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES but the acc pump has been a serious problem the leather cup was bad and I absolutely refuse to spend $68 for a kit so have been expermenting for a solution. I now have one small oring and weed whackere line wrapped around the piston which works well enough pump is prbably working at at 50% I can live with that to gain the smooth operation. If you set octane selector at 6 BTDC the ball is 5 BTDC then you are set up to 11 degrees BTDC. I did use a vacuum and RPM gage to set timing on the ball initially.I have also installed a Pertonix ignition. When I finish the next project changing differential out for one out of a 54 with the 3:70 and a 46 trans due to 3rd gear syncro problem with the one installed I will advance timing and see how it works. Thanks Gary

if you are going to the trouble of switching out the rear to a 54 3:70 why not try to find 53-54 powerglide rear 3:55 just a suggestion

I made that switch on my 41 2 door with a 261 it works just fine but running the original 216 in the 4 door I think the 3:55 may be a bit to high geared. Thanks Gary
