Hi Guys, It's been awhile since I've visited last time. I have just found a leak on my tranny. I have a 54 with a 55 PG. And it seems to be leaking at the speedometer connection. Last time I drove it, a day later I noticed a good size puddle under the car. The tranny only has 1000 miles on it and the cable is new. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help. It's good to be back
Jim

Hi Jim,

I figured some of the smarter folks would have replied by now. I will add that my car has been parked for about 2 months now, while I work on the body. I noticed what must be about 1 quart of ATF on the floor of my garage, but it was all coming out of the rear seal on the drive shaft. I tightened it by hand, and it cleaned it up.

Are you certain that it is leaking out of the speedometer cable? Once that is tightened, there really is nowhere for it to leak. Is it possible that it is leaking elsewhere and running to the cable?

My tranny still has small leaks everywhere, but then it has 160,000 miles and 58 years on it. I could be wrong, but I think these trannyies just leak by nature. Good luck,

I do not know if it applies but the early PG transmissions had a habit of burping transmission fluid after sitting for lengthy periods. A friend has a 57 which has a valve installed to stop this. Search the archives for more accurate information on this.

Ditto on that! Last night, litterally minutes after my last post, I looked under my car (that has been sitting for 2 months) and it was SPEWING ATF out of the fill spout. It was like it had been overfilled. Then, after starting it and driving for about 1 mile, I checked it and it is a quart low. No more burping. Weird!

I do not have a PG transmission but have read other posts and information on this and from what I understand it has to do with a drain down situation over filling a portion of the transmission. Gene Schneider has checked in on this kind of post before and that is what I absorbed from his post. The archives should have several different posts on the subject.

Thanks. Do you mean that the tranny was overfilled?

I've always wondered, because the lid on the dip stick is loose, and can slide up and down about an inch. I'm not 100% sure if I'm adding an extra "inch" of fluid or not.

No the fluid level running is where it is supposed to be, it is a matter of drain down from one place in the transmission to the lower end. Wish I could be more specific but being a 3spd person I do not save PG stuff.

Thanks.

I should add the the front end of the car was about 8 inches higher than the rear. Maybe this is why it "burped" so bad.
