Hey all,
I saw this in the classified ads here.
I caved and installed a MII in my '53 and now have no need for the original front end.
It was rebuilt 3 years ago and I installed an ECI disc brake kit on the original spindles. It has around 3k miles on it since the rebuild and upgrade. I will also include the drum brakes I removed from it as well.
Would this be a bolt on for my 52' Styleline? The disc brakes would be nice, have you all had good luck with the ECI products? Thanks for any direction, not much experience with the front ends here.

Chris,
The 49-54 frontends are basically a bolt-in swap. There are 2 primary differences to be aware of.
The 49-50 have Huck brakes (with smaller drums) and the 51-54 have the larger, better Bendix brakes.
The knuckle for attachment of the spindle (kingpin) is posidioned HIGHER on the 53-54 spindle support. Thus, installing the 53 frontend on your 52 car will lower the 52 about 1in.
Here is a picture of the 53-54(left) and 49-52 spindle support.

Thanks Tom,
I've been putting off rebuilding the brakes on this old car, maybe I won't have to. I'm wanting to end with a daily driver, so disc would be nice, and the stance with the front 1" lower would be fine with me as well. Thanks for the help and your fantastic sticky.

Hey all,
Here are the pics of the front end. It sounds like I will need a larger booster to run these. I was just putting a MC/booster off a Prizm that I had laying around. Sounds like it won't likely move enough oil to get the job done. At any rate, here are the pics, he's asking $200, all comments welcome. I am hoping to have a daily driver when finished, so I believe the upgrade is needed, just a question of when.

I apologize for the small photos, I copied off his post over on the HAMB and they enlarge there (and there are two more pics) if you want a better look.
TIA

$200 sounds like a very nice price.

Getting the disc brake set-up along with the entire front end seems like a great deal. Just the disc's alone should be worth the money. Plus with the 53 54 front end you will lower your car by an inch without having to cut coils or anything else. Great deal...

When I did the front discs on my 49 I got a dual master cylinder from Buffalo enterprises. I know Chevs of the 40's, the filling Station, and Natl Chevy all have them. And I've seen some posts of people who have made their own. Basically it is a bracket that mounts a dual MC and uses the pedal mounts from the stock MC. I think someone posted a thread here on how to make one. If he put on a MII maybe he has a dual mc he would sell too.
The only thing I have heard on some disc brake kits is that they move the wheels out 1/2" but it is no big deal. since this was on his car, ask about the clearance. I think $200 is a good price. Does it come with hoses and lines? I spent considerably more for my disc conversion. If you were to buy the parts you would spend a lot more than $200.

3,000 miles since a rebuild and that disc brake setup? I'd be all over that for $200...
