Can any one tell me why Chevy offered both a short and tall throwout bearing for the 57? I checked the Shop Manual and they mention both but do not mention the application.
I am replacing the old clutch and trannsmission and don't know which bearing to order.
Thanks very much,
MikeH

Good Gwad!
Yer makin' me feel old sittin' here remembering gettin' stuck on that one way back when.
As I recall it had to do with the difference in a fingered or diaphram type pressure plate.

Here's an idea, put back the same thing you took out. Musta worked before it wore out.

A flat finger diaphragm presssure plate (original) needs a long throwout bearing.
A Borg and Beck coil spring pressure plate (original) needs a short throwout bearing.
A raised finger diaphragm pressure plate (popular replacement) needs a short throwout bearing.
