how does one 'clock' a 2speed wiper motor so that wipers operate without slaming into the lower windshield trim?

Hello Black,
The motor must be in the PARK position before attempting to "clock" it.
When you turn off the wiper switch, does the motor go to the PARK position?
If not - the old grease may be holding the switch open and create an issue trying to adjust the wiper arms.
Remove the old grease..... if that is the case.

it may be the switch Its a rebuilt motor.
without wiper arms the transmission arms operate nicely.
I put wiper arms and blades on and arms go up 1/2 way and stop?

Hi Black,
Not abnormal.... with arms off, the motor can have "enough enertia" that it slips past the park switch.
The drag of the wipers on the glass - does help with the adjustment procedure.
Based on your assessment, it sounds like the switch is out of adjustment.

Do you have the inspection & service manual for the wiper at all? I have and it helped a lot, because it contains exactly these informations (also wiring, test-procedures, etc.)

Any chance I can get that information? When I bought my '59 the PO said he replaced the wiper motor at some point and they worked like they should. Then he said at some point they started cycling backwards and parking in the wrong position (horizontally) He had just ignored it and used them that way but they also scratched up the glass where it bends. I would like to correct the problem but not sure where to start. It also seems like the wiper switch is inconsistent as I can turn it on and manually park them at the cowl by turning them off, but then eventually they will automatically park horizontally without me touching the switch. This is the last of the quirky electrical things I need to fix on this car. Please help!

I meant to say "vertically" not horizontally. How do I edit a post?

For a short time after you post, you will see 'edit' in the blue bar at the bottom right corner of your post. Click that and you will get a window with your text. You can edit there. The bottom of the edit screen will give some options.

Sounds to me like the grease is hard inside the wiper motor and the park switch is not functioning properly.
Best bet is to remove the wiper motor, open up the cover (not the motor) and clean out the old grease.
Then readjust the parking switch.

i too have a similar issue, they seem to "park in the correct position but will stop at the vertical postion and begin to click, once turned off they return to the prper park postion. could this be built up grease too?
