Hello I have a 50 2 door sedan that converted over to the cavalier rack and pinion and i need some assistance on the pump.. I have a 58 348 with the generator/power steering and im not sure if i need to lower the pressure coming out of that pump for the r&p i have.. Ive heard that the cavalier racks need around 1000 psi but i cant find ANY info on the ps/generator setup..
Ive used gm metric pumps in the past for this purpose and just welded up the hole in the regulator part but im not sure if the procedure is the same on this one..
Any help is appreciated..
THANKS

Are you saying your '50 2-door is running a '58 348 engine? If so, you MUST post some pictures!!
As far as your P.S. question, I doubt the '58 P.S. pump puts out a lot more than 1,000 PSI, but I'm not sure. The stock '53-'54 P.S. pump is supposed to put out between 750 and 900 PSI, according to the Shop Manual. Did GM amp up the P.S. pump by '58? I don't know. CT member Jalapeno would know--he's an expert on old Chevy P.S. systems, but I'm just an inspired amateur on these old P.S. systems.

Before I put the Jag front end under it I use the Vega rack. I used the GM Second Generation pump and remote reservir with it. It worked well for me except I had the front end lowered 3" and the rack set to low to the ground. Just my comment.

The gen mounted pump is rated at 750 psi, it will do well in the 600-800 range for it's original application.
I have no idea what the Cavalier rack requires.
You can get an adjustable valve to tone down the pressure if needed, it connects in line with the pressure hose, look at Heidt's or Summit or Jegs.
And yes, please post pix!

As much as I like these cars with 6 bangers, the 348 is a SWEET choice!

Thanks for the pix!
I noticed the 348 has an alternator now, will you change it over to the gen/pump if the pressure proves to be OK?

No worries.
Did the pump work OK as is, or did you need to reduce the pressure?

The pump pressure seems to be ok. You can turn it pretty easily when your stopped and it still has steering feel when your driving
