I'm still trying to get this horn ring to work right. Is the adjustment that precise And just what direction does that concave washer go on ????
I've tried both way , the center up and the center of washer down And I'm not sure even using these pictures, http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/miscellaneous...
Can someone straighten me out ?? Does the washer go center down with edges up , or the other way center up with the edges down?? Thats looking at steering wheel on column . THANKS

For the life of me I cannot remember which way the conical washer goes in there but I would assume with the cone side up providing return spring pressure on the horn ring. Adjustment is pretty precise. I shoved socks in the horns to mute them when adjusting mine. Did not want the neighbors coming after me.

Try this one. It shows how the disc goes in.

I appear to have everything assembled correctly and I've spent over 6 HOURS adjusting those 3 stupid ,dang screws.!
Everytime I think it right ,It starts honking when I go down the road .
I can sit in the garage and twist that wheel and blow that honk and it works perfect ,,,but go for a drive and It starts blowing . I can stop it by hitting horn ring or pulling on it ,but I still haven't found that sweet spot where it only blows when asked to.
Thanks

Is it possible that your horn relay is bad and when you go for a drive it makes the connections? Try tapping on the relay and bouncing the car when in your garage to see if it starts honking.

No it's the horn ring. I put a new steering wheel in with the full horn ring instead of just a center button.
Found a real nice 1951 wheel ,polished it up and some fresh paint ,looks like nes. My other ring was cracking pretty bad.

I had a spell of unwanted honking after adjusting my horn button to PERFECTION in the garage. Turned out that when turning the wheel the bottom edge of the steering wheel was rubbing the after marked turn signal housing and moving every thing just enough to make the horn blow. Driving through the parking lot for the Memorial Day Ice breaker elicited a number of one finger salutes, embarrassing to say the least.

Yeah that's what happened yesterday. I was going to a big cruise-in, where everyone knows me and that stinking horn started blowing. I pulled over on a side street and disconnected it to avoid the embarrassment

I am finally attempting to reinstall the steering wheel on my '50. When I tighten the nut on the column, the horn bar seems to also tighten up to the steering wheel. In other words, it doesn't have any play. Also, when I insert the plastic sleeve into the steering wheel, it doesn't seat flush with the hub of the wheel, it sticks out. This causes the contact ring to bend up. It doesn't seem to me that this is normal, is it? Any advice will be appreciated, thanks in advance, Goatie

Offest your embarrassement by waving to everyone while the horn continues to sing .... they'll just think you're happy to see them.
