Want to change my '86 from R12 to R134a. There are so many kits out there one doesn't know where to begin. Please advise as to what procedure to follow. Thanks, Ed

Hello EJ,

Use the kit which includes adapters for the "hi-lo" fittings. That is all you will need.

Charge to 80% of the original specification R12 charge and you should be "good to go"

Nothing else needs modifications.

You can still get R-12 on ebay if you apply for the certification. Personally I'd just change the o-rings and put r-12 back in. I always read that it cools better.

Rather than change will try the Freeze 12 substitute.

Be careful with the FREEZE substitute.
It contains PROPANE - therefore, you A/C system becomes EXPLOSIVE.

The 134 will work fine - that is if you do not have access to R-12. Be careful what you buy on Ebay - as they call it R-12 and it is a substitute. I would only consider NAME BRANDS or factory sealed containers.

Some folks claim that you will need to replace the expansion tube with one from an R134 system, too...I'm not 100% sure, but folks that are in the know have told me this more than once......Can't hurt to do it.

i know that when i did the conversion on my Silver Anniversary coupe (1978) the compressor, evaporator orifice and drier. i looked on Ecklers and the kit to convert your car has the same parts along with new o-rings, and a bottle of the proper oil for the system. it works great too.
