I have a 96 s10 4.3l x with 160k. I'm planning on cleaning the throttle body, egr valve, and iac valve. Mainly because it has a very slight hesitation at idle and only some of the time. Plus I've got the time.

My question is can I clean the iac valve? My haynes says not to jse any solvents or cleaners because it's an electrical componat but I've found you tube videos where thry spay the heck out if it. I don't know if they have the same 1 though.

To clean the IAC:
Remove the IAC.
Always hold the IAC with the electrical plug pointing up and the plunger end pointing down
Clean the tip of the plunger with a solvent soaked rag- (This does not mean to spray the tip with solvent or cleaner)

The IAC should not be cleaned with carburetor cleaner or other harsh chemicals. If the chemicals get down inside the IAC, it will damage it. Using carburetor cleaner on a rag to clean the tip of the plunger is ok as long as the plunger is pointing down so no liquid gets inside the IAC.

Be careful, the IAC will break easily. It is aluminum. Clean the passages while you have the IAC removed.

I do not suggest unscrewing the pintle (plunger). If you don’t get in back in far enough, the IAC can get damaged if the “pintle” (plunger) bottoms out when you screw the IAC back in.

This next step will usually do more good then cleaning the IAC:
I have some very large Q-tips I put lacquer thinner on and clean the throttle bore while holding the throttle wide open.
Also clean the bottom of the throttle plates.

I have done some searching on you tube to find informative accurate concise information, with no miss-information, to attach to posts when I am helping people. So far I have saved NO links. I have not spent a lot of time searching, but I quickly found that You tube was a good way to waste a lot of time.
For those of you that are wondering why you are not getting replies to your thread:

Did you give the model, year, engine, fuel system type, and transmission information?

If the it has been altered from stock let us know about that too.

You’re welcome. A thank you is always appreciated.

My first suggestion for a possible fix for a hesitation is to replace the fuel filter.
For those of you that are wondering why you are not getting replies to your thread:

Did you give the model, year, engine, fuel system type, and transmission information?

If the it has been altered from stock let us know about that too.

Have you checked fuel pressure? It may be getting low. I had that problem with mine. It started to get hard to start and idle was rough. Eventually, the pump failed. I knew it would. Pressure was down to 50 PSI. It should not run at such low pressure. I think the new FI spider allowed it to run at such low pressure.

It runs fine. I can just watch the rpm fluctuate 1 or 200 rpm when i get to a stop light. Usually when it's cold. Before I start chasing things I'm going to clean what I can. I've only had this truck for a couple weeks so I'm really just plating with it.

Ok, new question. My Haynes sucks. The picture in my manual has arrows pointing to random spots in my engine compartment to point out different parts. Where are the iac, egr.

Is the egr the cylinder on front top of engine above to water pump and just left of the ac compressor(when looking from the front of the truck)?

Iac valve, is it pluged into the side of the throttle body or behind the throttle body between it and the distributer. I have a chilton in the mail. Hopefully it'll have better pictures.

The EGR valve is above the water pump. The IAC is behind the throttle position sensor. It's second from left to right.


Use a good TBI cleaner. Clean the MAF sensor!! MAF readings are very important. Use only a MAF cleaner. A carb cleaner will work down inside the TBI.
