Hey Friend, Are you getting this off of a GM Aluminum Stamp? I tried investigating and helping ya, but every VIN report I tried pulling it up stated invalid VIN.

Is the number off the plate on the firewall or off the serial number (not vin) located on the A pillar drivers side.

That looks like the engine serial number. If so, I think it just decodes to tell you that it was a passenger car engine, what year it was manufactured, which plant it came out of, and what the sequential manufacturing number of the engine was.

That information can be found at Keith Hardy's site here:

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/51...

As I understand it, a lot of States titled cars by the engine serial number back then. My car is titled that way here in Washington State. This has caused heartburn for people who do not have the original engine in their cars, but need to get new titles issued (buying the car from out of State, for instance).
1951 BelAir - Bought it in 1969, sold it in 1970, found it and bought it again in 1999.

If the engine number is on the title, then THAT engine should be in the car.

If that engine has been replaced ..... you have nothing in the car to verify that the title is accurate for that specific car.

That can lead to a large P.I.T.A. with the D.M.V.

I've emailed the seller and HOPE I'm not putting him on the spot!

I am curious about what the exact modle is and what were the factory options. Collors too.

Thanks!

Try this link. It looks like a 51 engine according to this.

Here's a neat little gotcha. Canadian cars don't have that door pillar everyone's talking about there.

Mine is registered to the serial number on the aluminum tag on the passenger side firewall.

This tag would also tell you the body style and original colours and such.

Hey Sir X, We've met over on facebook a while back. You still not sure about the trade? It looks like a 51 Styleline. The number you've posted seems to be the engine number and should have been the original vin when the car was new. The info your looking for regarding color etc would be on the cowl plate or Fisher Body plate. It's found under the hood on the fire wall.

It sure looks like a 2 door. I think the front door would have been shorter if it was a 4 door car.

States don't have any discretion as to what the VIN is - it's the number on the MSO.

What's the MSO?

My '53 210 convertible had been titled on the engine number, but I pulled the engine and replaced it before I re-titled it in my name. So that meant the number on the title didn't appear anywhere on the car. If I'd been in Cal. or some other crazy State, I'd have been in trouble, and possibly gotten my car confiscated, but in my small town I just went to the local P.D., got a cop who knew my reputation, and he signed off on the paperwork without even looking at the old engine or my car. THAT'S the way Guv'mint should work--on honesty and not on a bunch of stupid rules invented by bored bureaucrats who've never done any real work.

That said, there really wasn't a VIN on these cars, as we understand VIN's today. Cars back then were either titled on the body serial number, or on the motor number, and it was very common to title the car on the motor number.

Fair enuff. Looks to be a '51 or '52 styleline deluxe. (Judging by the chrome around the windows). Could be a styleline special too (same body style).

<< mine. 2 door. still a hack job
