I have an 89 Caprice Base trim 4dr with 5.0l engine, TBI. It is about as show room perfect as any car can be. 43K Original miles and i've owned it since very late 1989.
I have the FACTORY service manual.
My concern is ROAD SIDE break downs and emergency repairs just to get the car home or to 'friendlier surrounding" for more appropriate repairs.
1.Ffuel pump in the gas tank that is difficult to repair/change under adverse 'side of the road" repairs.
2. The TBI. Any one have a list of the various parts to carry as spares??? Fuel pump relay, TPS, injectors, idle air control solenoid, ANYTHING else?????
Quick road side diagnosis to determine WHICH part is bad????
Altho i've owned this car for over 20 years it has never given me any trouble but i am trying to prepare for when it does cause trouble. Especialy away from home. I plan to srive the car alot more now in the comming years than i have in the past.
Suggestions welcome.

Wow,
Very few people post over here.
I used to hang in the truck section. I rarely ever post anymore.
If you have trouble with your TBI Caprice, much of the 1988-1992 truck diagnostic information would match your car closely enough to be helpful.
I carry and extra distributor module in my TBI vehicle. It is a common failure part and is not only needed for spark. The computer needs to receive a distributor reference pulse from the distributor module to trigger the injectors.
I also carry the heat sink compound that goes under the module. The compound helps dissipate heat from the module. Without it, the module will fail.
The next item I would take on road trips is a fuel filter. Bring the tools to change it.
This system is very dependent on the coolant sensor that the ECM monitors. It is in the intake near the thermostat. It is only about a $20 part. The common failure is it runs rich because the sensor fails.
Some extra fuses.
Tool kit.
