I took my 51 chevy to the shop for a new okie bushing. The mechanic has the new bushing in and says the 4 gaskets or shims are not enough. He used all 4 that came with the kit and says the ball is too tight. I have ordered another kit from Chevs of the 40's. Has anyone ever ran into needing more than 4 shims for proper movement of the ball? Thanks!

I didnt run into the shim issue however I ran into an issue with tightness in that the yoke for the U-joint will not go into the Oakie bushing whatsoever. I could beat it in with a hammer I am sure but it will be in the re forever if I do and also will not rotate without extreme force to be sure. Thus I will be attempting to pull the Oakie back out and start over fresh.
THis time however I will slide the yoke into it before I insert it into the torque tube to see it is in need of being honed to a larger inside diameter.
That is if I can get it back out with that pulling tool I bought so many years ago when work started on my Hardtop.

The ball will wear in to the new shims. I used only 3 when I rebuilt the transmission and installed an oakie bushing.

When I was working on that I couldn't find a tool to remove the old bushing and NCA told me I could drive the old one deeper by installing the new one over it. I had to beat and beat and beat on the thing, and ended up only driving the new one in about 2/3 of the way. I sawed it off and tried to push the ball on--no way would it go. I had to grind on the inside of the ball housing tube until it would slide over the driveshaft housing. Finally got it all together, but it cost me some gray hair.

For something that is suppose to be a quick fix, it sure turned out to be a pain in the rear. I told the mechanic to put the 4 shims in and torque to 4 bolts to 12 ft lbs. As 2blue2 stated above, I hope it just wears in. I will check the torque on the bolts every so often just in case it does wear in and the bolts loosen up a bit.

Ive been looking for that "old tool" for ages and there isnt one to be had anywhere.
Since I stripped the rear axle of the gear cluster and power coated the torque tube Im going to tap the old bushings out from the rear end with a 1 inch pipe with a connector on it. Ive read that with just a little smoothing to the outside that it fits and will get both the front and rear bushing out of the way for the replacement one piece bushing.
Anybody think this is the wrong way to do things?

Sure is strange, the bushing removal tool was readily available for rent when I did mine. The cost of rent was 45 bucks which was the price of the tool, that was credited back to me upon sending the tool back. I purchased the bushing from The Filling Station.

I bought the tool and would lend it out to CT member who needed it. I sent it to california from a guy who posted here and he has not sent it back after I have repeatedly asked him to ship it back. He was a real new member so I suppose I should have had some sort of insurance that he would send it back.

It is a fix, but would not call it a quick fix.

Yeah
ive been a regular at the filling station recently (live 2.5 hrs away) and they said the source that makes them isnt anymore and they may not be able to get them anymore. Most folks just bought and kept them.
The other option is a bearing puller that fits or just grinding out the housing and front bearing. My bearing came out with the universal joint assembly and was about a micron thin and came out in 3 pieces but the main part of the bushihing is still solidly in place. That has to come out or get pushed in for the replacement to go in.

Not every one here is the same. I gave a member some small brake parts for return of postage cost. Never did see a check or even a thank you. First time out the parts were returned as undeliverable at the address given so actually I was out the postage money twice.

Ok so i worried a bunch about getting the old bushing out but with the torque tube out of the car its a snap. Small bearing puller and 3 pops with the slide and out it comes.
