We (my son-in-law and grandson) are building a '50 3100 PU. They want to use a 700R tranny behind a 350 SBC. We have been told that the '78 10 bolt rear end (308) we have, won't let the 700R perform as it should. I've been looking but can't find the right info. So here I am, coming to the best resource I know to get the right answer. We are going to be using P215/55R16 tires. I know that number is needed to do the calculations. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Bill
PS: I think the T-350 tranny would be just fine but I keep getting voted down!

I agree with you. I could see using a 700R if you do alot of hiway miles.
I've always liked the 350 with gears in the low 3's. Just my 2 cents but I think what you have in back would work great with a 350.

I’m using a 3.08 with a TH350 in my Nomad and turn about 2200rmp at 60 on the highway. If you have a 700r available I would go that route, but bump the ration to 3.55 ish unless you do a lot of highway driving then the 3.08 would drop the rpm’s down. Not sure if the 3.08 would handle hills with the overdrive may down shift a lot; someone else may know that. The difference between the 3.55 and 3.08 is about 400 rpm at 60 mph.

I have a stock 3:55 in my car w/ a SB and it doesn't work well in OD. I liked my TH350 far better and I don't even have the OD locked up. Not enough on the bottom end either, pretty slow. So with what others are claiming it brings me back to the obvious question of what engine is it behind? Any transmission that works well must be in the power range of the engine that drives it. Mine does'nt have power until about 2600 PRM and thats where it feel comfortable so the tranny should allow it to run there for best results. Otherwise I predict there will be no joy in mudville. In OD a 3:08 will be an effective 2:20 something which means they will need a diesel.

If you could find someone that has a 350/700r/3.73gear combo, you need to talk to them and see if you could get a ride with them. I have two vehicles and one has 350/700r/3.42gear setup and the other one has 350/700r/3.73gear. The one with 3.73 gears is my pick. Better acceleration, more response at 60mph and still gets 17 mpg (when my wife drives). The one with the 3.42 gears seems to be hunting between 3rd and 4th gear at 60mph. At 60 mph, the engine is not high enough into the power band ,or curve to have any response. The engine is a ZZ4. I use B&M Ratchet shifters in both vehicles and with anything less than 60-65, I lock it in 3rd. I am running 225/55/17 tires. That's just mine 2 cents. LC

Thanks to all for the replies. We have since done a lot of research and talked to several tranny "gurus". Evidently, the 350/700R4/308 combo was standard issue for all 80-90 Camaro/ Firebirds. Since I used to have an 85 Camaro, I feel very comfortable with the combination now. Specially since we're not building this truck to be a "heavy hauler". Thanks again for all the responses. Bill

I guess I'm a couple weeks late for this post but that is what I would recommend. I have been running this combination for over 10 years now and I am very happy. The 700r4 gives you a lower first gear than the th350 and a higher high gear. Some of the earlier camaro's had rear gears in the 270's as I remember.
