probably a silly question
I had bob drop by to borrow a few tools, yesterday and I needed to go to the local auto parts store for a case of oil, so he decided to ride along as he also needed a few minor supplies.
now I wear glasses because I just don,t like contact lenses.
I got into my 1996 corvette, fastened the seat belt, opened the arm rest and swapped my clear lenses glasses for dark prescription sun glasses , swapping the clear lens versions into the case in the arm rest,, yesterday, and my "friend" looked at me and asked if I always swap too sun glasses when I drive the corvette, then he said, "you know its kind of hopeless at your age to put on dark sun glasses to make you look COOL"
honestly the thought never entered my mind!
Im way past the age where being (COOL) ever enters my thoughts, If its sunny out I tend to drive with polarized sun glasses, if its dark out I use clear lenses that darken if left in the sun, "transition lenses" I think they are called,
so heres the question, " how many guys, who wear glasses ,take the time too swap too polarized lens on sun glasses to drive on sunny days vs just jumping in the car and driving"

I'm with you Grump. I can't stand eye drops so there is no way I would ever wear contacts. I have bifocals, but never wear them unless I'm reading or driving. Like you I wear my prescription sun glasses during the day driving, and my clear ones at night when I drive. I've got a pair of each in each of my cars, so I don't have to go look for them when I drive. And no that's not a silly question.

I generally do not wear sunglasses as the sun doesn't really bother me. I have a pair that I will swap out occasionally, but like you, cool has nothing to do with it. At my age, my far vision has actually improved but near vision has grown worse, so I must have my bifocals for close work now.

My eyes are sensitive to the sun, I'm nearsighted and am told that is common for those of use who are.
So I keep the prescription sunglasses in the truck and put them on if it's sunny. If I'm going to be outdoors I carry them with me and wear them if needed. Wearing them has nothing to do with looking cool and never has.
If I wore contacts, I'd still wear the sunglasses the same way, they'd just be non-prescription.

Every time. I wear sunglasses virtually anytme I am out in the sun, driving or not. I was a pilot for 35 yearts and ALWAYS wore sunglasses when flying in daylight. As I aged I found out that wearing them as I did, kept my night vision in better shape than many younger guys I flew with who did not wear sunglasses. I don't care if I look cool or not. Actually at my age, (60s), it is difficult to look cool under any circumstances!

I swap as well. Too much bright sunlight isnt good for your eyes ( at least that is what the flight surgeons told me over the many years of flying). Went to purchase a pair of transition lenses and the optician told me they wont darken as much due to the shading of the new windshields. Saved a few bucks there.

I would have said. I need a picture to see how uncool I am. Let me drop you off and you snap a picture with your phone. Email or text it to me. I would drive two blocks then turn around so he could take a picture. As I passed him, I would floor it!! .......... Don't worry about coming back. He has his phone and shoes on!! He didn't want to be seen with anyone uncool anyway!!

I might add that I buy the darkest tint they sell.
I've never messed with the "chameleon" lenses as they don't get all that dark anyway.
It's a little bit of an inconvience to carry an extra pair of glasses to an automotive event, a ball game, etc. but for me it's worth the trouble.

Nearsighted here too, and same thing, extremely sensitive to sunlight. I've solved it for the most part by working night shift so my exposure to sunlight in general is pretty rare. Not so great for my tan which has faded away...all that sunlight is bad for your skin, too! It's how at nearly 42 I still have my boyish good looks.

Ya know that is a good question, funny but good. I have not always been a sunglasses wearer, but as I have aged I tend to like them when outside during the day. Cool or not, its just easier on the eyes. The people the make my glasses have become accustomed to asking me if I want an extra pair to make into sunglasses. Yes, I wear bifocals too, I was under the impression that with the over 40 crowd bifocals are a pre-req. Also having a light, which I just turned on, at my computer desk.

I'm way past looking cool (or wanting to). I wear contact lenses because it's more convenient than working with bifocals and I always wear sunglasses outside to reduce glare. Anybody who thinks I wear them to look cool doesn't know me.

Years back when I first had bifocals (actually I never had them, I started with transition trifocals), I had them make me prescription sunglasses with only the far vision prescription (cheapskate in me), thinking I'm not reading when I'm driving or when I'm outdoors. Wrong, I soon discovered I couldn't see the gauges when driving, among other things. So since then the prescription sunglasses have had the same progressive trifocal as the clear glasses.

I only need glasses for reading and I do wear my Ray Bans in the Vette. Bottom line is I'm cool no matter what I wear.

I've been wearing contact lenses...8 hours or more every day... since my sophmore year of high school; I'm 58 years old now. Next step is Lasik but I'm really in no hurry; at this point I'm more concerned about my arthritic hip.
I keep a pair of sunglasses in each of my cars, however I seldom put them on unless I'm driving into a rising or setting sun. Maybe my eyes have toughened up from so many years of wearing hard contacts, but sunlight just doesn't seem to bother me much. That, plus it's easier to read my gages without the tinted glasses.
I don't necessarily think "less" of someone I see driving with sunglasses, unless their attitude gives me reason to change my mind.

I've never worn sun glasses to be 'Cool'. I do wear or would like to wear sun glasses when the sun is in my eyes. I'm also required to wear +1.00 glasses when driving, at 66 years old I guess that's not bad. The flip up sun glasses do not attach to the cheap reading glasses very good. +1 sun glasses are hard to find, so sun glasses don't get worn often.

As for the cool part, anybody that's been around more than 5 decades and drives a Vette is flat cool no matter what kind of shades they do or don't wear.
