Transmission at normal operating temperature, engine running, level ground, gear selector in Park; if you want to get really picky about it you should cycle the gear selector from Park through each gear with your foot on the brake, slowly, pausing for a moment at each selection, then all the way back to Park before checking. That's the super-O.C.D. way to do it though and honestly running it through the gears really isn't necessary.

Have you ever read the OWNERS MANUAL? It states that vehicle MUST be RUNNING and in operating temp range.

Really hate to think I wasted your time. No I dont have a OWNERS MANUAL, but thanks for chimimg in. Lot of help.
The reason I asked is that I changed the radiator and it has trans cooler. I know how to check the fluid but was a bit confused to see the cold range on the dip stick. I assumed that it lost about a quart with cooler and a bit leaking. But the fluid on the stick is always differant, cant get accurate reading.
Had a bit of vibration when shifting so I just added quart. Seems to be ok now. I will keep a eye on it. Thanx to some for the help.
If fluid question is below your standards then I have a electric problem a few post down. Maybe you could help with that?
