The horn circuit is like the courtesy lights. It is a 'ground searching' deal.
Trigger wire from the horn relay comes up thru/in the turn signal switch wiring and grounds to the steering column when the switch is activated.

there should be a round, spring loaded copper contact to which the wire connects. the copper contact rubs on the insulated belleville washer which is grounded when pressing the horn button.
look in parts catalogs. a lot of times ther will be a detailed assembly diagram or purchase a factory assembly manual.

Mark, here's a couple of pictures of the brass ring which activates the horn relay when the horn button is pressed (grounding the ring).
The reason a horn relay is used is because the horns draw too much current to be routed through the firewall and up to the steering wheel. The relay is mounted on the radiator support on the driver's side. Only the relay coil is triggered by the horn "switch".
These pictures are of the American AutoWire replacement turn signal switch. The black wire is the horn wire.

Yes, remove the horn cap, then the nut. You might need a cheap wheel puller to get the steering wheel off. After the wheel is off, it will be painfully obvious where this switch is located!

Mark, at the 11 o'clock position of the switch in the photos, you'll see a square pocket with a hole in it. That is for the turn signal lever arm. It is held in place with a self tapping screw. If you don't have a turn signal arm, you don't have a switch.
Also, everything you see is one piece. If you are missing the brass ring, you need a new switch.

Hi Leon,
Thanks for the effort & photos they are great, looks like mine might be missing the cancelling cam screwed to bottom of steering wheel photo 10, but the section onto of coloumn photo 11 is different, mine is metal & the indicator stalk screws into a tapped hole in this, then there is a flat metal spring on right hand side of metal section which i presumed was the self canceling spring but it may not be, it seams original but i'll keep looking to see if i can work it out, cheers again & thanks for your help Mark

Mark, if you have a tilt column, which I believe you do, download this (which is in the Reference Materials area):

Gosh, I wish I'd known that was a tilt before I presented you the non-tilt turn signal switch!! No problem! Glad we got that straight...
Download my manual and it has a parts diagram in the training document. It shows you how to take it apart and re-assemble it.
That actuator plate with the springs drives a remote control mechanical cable down to a turn signal switch mounted outside the steering column (under the dash). The switches are available, but not the mechanical cable. You could probably make one out of a lawn mower throttle cable if you're missing that part.
Don't break anything, very few parts are available for it.
Glad to help out. GO SLOW - DON'T BREAK ANYTHING!
