So there's been this little debate about the wheel covers on my car going on for a while now. My dad and grandpa are pretty sure (not completely, but ALMOST certain) that it had the smaller ones, but i have only even really seen the full sized covers, with or without the spinners. I couldn't even find a picture of any kind of "dog dish" wheel covers until i stumbled across this:
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/58...
The ones on the left.
I have been looking for where to get a set of these, out of curiosity. We don't know where the wheel covers are for this car, but there's a chance we may still find them. If i end up having to buy some, i'd probably go with the full size, because of the availability, unless you guys had any leads as to where i could find small ones (for originality).
Any help?

I've seen them on eBay as well, in fact that's where I bought mine last year. I want to say I paid around $100 for all four, and they were below-average driver-quality. Be aware, they are usually pretty beaten up from being pried off and hammered on over the last 50+ years; so expect that they will need considerable work, rechroming, and then detailing. The material is very thin/weak. My friend was able to work the metal on mine to get them reasonably straight and smooth - would not pass muster on a 1000 point showcar though, and then rechroming them cost me $250 locally. I have yet to tackle detailng the cross-flags/etc.
Good luck.

Hi
What model is your car? I think the wheel covers differed based on the model

For the 1958 model year wheel covers were standard on the Bel Air, Impala and Nomad station wagons only. They were available on other models as a dealer installed accessory. The '58 Chevy passenger cars that came standard with wheel covers had argent/silver painted wheels.

It's a Biscayne, 4 door. Original motor is the 283 with rochester 4 barrel, and powerglide. No power brakes, power steering or anything too fancy besides that. The wheels are the same color as the color of the car (tropic turqoise).
I really do not see the smaller covers like you guys are talking about. They're all the full size or corvette wheel covers.
In terms of quality, i'm not looking for anything brand new and shiny looking. I don't have the money for that right now I'd be happy with something that looks good at say, 5-10 feet while i'm whizzing by.
Edited by RumblingV8 on 03-29-12 02:42 PM. Reason for edit: fixed the color. I guess i'm blind.

Unless the small and large look extremely similar when they're off the wheel?

these are the ones my dad remembers on the car.

The ones for the BelAir, Impala and Nomad are the only ones i'm seeing on ebay and such, as well. Was the Biscayne the only model that came with the smaller ones? What about the Delray?

Here's a couple of pictures of what the 58 dog dish hub caps look like. They aren't reproduced & will usually set you back a few $$$ if you can find a nice set.

I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a decent set, cuz my dad ran a set of the '58 hub caps on his '56 210 2dr HT he had many years ago. I found a mint-y set of four like Jen's at the swap meet last year. I think the guy was asking $700 for the set - too rich for my budget...

If those things were mint, that was probably a decent deal. It is sure hard to shell out $700 for hub caps though !

Good to know. I had only been casually looking for a set. When I would find an example of that cap, it was usually in fair to poor shape, so I would pass. When I spotted those gems, I didn't have any knowledge to know if they were fairly priced; overpriced repops; or if he was looking for a sucker.

Hello Mark,
All '58 Impalas had Argent Wheels - as well as the Bel Air's if the full sized wheel covers were ordered from the factory.
Actually the Argent Silver wheel started in the Spring of 1957 on the Bel Airs at the request of the Chevrolet Dealer Group. This would allow the dealer to swap tires to accomodate the desires of the customer.
"would you like whitewalls to go with that 348....??"

Nope. My 58 Impala coupe had the unmolested wheels and hubcaps on it when I bought it. The wheels are argent on A Sierra Gold/Beige car. The beige is non-stock. I didn't like the original cream.

I see the small (aka dog dish) caps frequently on Ebay.
Although the ones ones below are listed for a Corvette, methinks they are the same as the Biscayne. These aren't pristine, but for the price they should be relatively easy to straighten and polish or rechrome.
No finder's fee is necessary.

Yes 58 Corvette w/big brake are the same. Here's a pretty nice set below. Not NOS... but they will empty your wallet.

Yeah... it must be a classic case of -supply & demand. Makes you wonder what happened to all of them. Maybe they all got used in training.

Wow, an old pic of a young Swiffer Girl !
It seems like whenever you see these things they are pretty beat up. Mine are actually the 1959 poverty caps, and I can say that the material these things are made of is about as pliable as tinfoil - so they got battered fairly easily over the last 50+ years. Seems like whenever I notice them on eBay it's about like the above auction-links showed, about $100 for cores or at least $600 for a decent set; or even more for a set that have been restored. Kind of tough to swallow paying as much for a set of poverty caps as you would for a set of rims!
